Photoshop: What space does it need?

Yes
So I have 4gb of memory (only 3 usable in windows due to PAE limits).
I have ~2.5GB free on C:, and 6GB free on I:, I have photoshop set to use I: for its scratch space.
When trying to do HDR merges, photoshop complains that I have run out of space.

How much space does photoshop require?

I have been using the images in 16bit, as I assumed that the extra range might be helpful. 3 images for the HDR are open when I attempt it.
Documents are listed at 100mb

Are you sure you haven't missed a 0 from either of your two disk figures. 2.5 and 6G is not a lot (yes, I know it sounds a lot when you are dealing with images).

What computer are you running PS on?

I am running short on space unfortunately, my machine is 5 years old. I deal with PetaByte size systems so I know that this isn't exactly a lot of free space, but generally for scratch files, going above 5GB is avoided due to the relative slug pace of disk over memory.

I am aiming to get a new computer, which would be SSD for the OS, but I suspect that I would only have ~60GB for the OS and scratch then. My intended image area would be 2x500 RAID0, with 2x1TB raid1 for backup (then imaged to my server [around 5TB, and similar age])

Currently, I have a 200GB disk, with around 100G used for windows, programs, email, I hate the way that MS Windows bloats over the years. Other space is used by games, and a linux OS partition. I could trash them I suppose.
System is dual processor dual core opteron ~2GHz, memory, 4GB arranged as two 128bit 2GB banks.

I suppose I am trying to judge at the moment whether I am going to be strangled by only having a 60GB SSD

2.5gb free? yikes.. you know thats going to be denting your system performance?

if it helps im running a 60gb SSD as my OS and programs drive (currently 50% used), nothing else sits on there, all of my files sits on my RAID5 NAS and my lightroom catalogues and PS scratch sit on a 1TB 7.2k eSATA drive.

Yup, it will dent, but I do try and degragment. Windows just sucks so much disk space up, and I do not like to re-install.

I always thought I was pushing my luck if I went below 10% free space on a hard-drive.

My windows directory itself is 15.5GB in size, but I do have all of the development and debug libraries installed, so it is a little heavier than most :)
