you got a link to that? it's not on their site (though the individual triggers only just hit their site), but they sent out a mailer to everyone with a student account mentioning it (at £120 - so £150 less the student 20% off) a couple weeks back :/

edit: just read 'in store only'. dufus.

pretty damn close to buying 4 tbh :/

pw's got a bit of a losing battle there tbh... even if ruled to be infringing patents both here and in the US, everyone will still just buy them off ebay like they do with everything else...

Not really, if the case is ruled in their favour Ebay will pull all the listings, I doubt they want taken to the cleaners again the way they were by Rolex.....

No mate they're only available in store, I've ordered mine over the phone with Manchester
 
I got 2 off calumet website so far so good :) very solid build, easy to use etc... work very well.
 
Received mine today, very pleased seem a better quality build than PW's no misfires very very impressed
 
So, are we saying Calumet are the best place to buy from?

Contrary to my earlier post, these (Atlas) look like a better all-in-one solution than my Skyports, which are currently doing my head in because of the wired connection and the fact I keep slapping them around.

The only thing that I'm questioning is their suitability for portable softbox use on cold shoes because the female and male hotshoes are 90 degrees effectively. I suppose the wires could come out for connection if that's a problem. For bare flash they look ideal.

The new, shapely Cactus V5s look an interesting alternative (and probably cheaper) but not sure how they stack up.... anyone tried them?

Good idea, although sods law dictates that The Atlas design will have been withdrawn from sale and we'll both feel like tits :D

So far. I suspect they are gunning in the US to get a big win and then they can use that as a reference case to make Atlas roll over in the rest of the world. No point fighting on several fronts when one victory would make them surrender everywhere.

One remedy that they might like to pursue is to get Atlas to recall every item they have ever sold. Like when Polaroid sued Kodak. About a billion in damages plus Kodak had to basically buy back all their infringing cameras. And that was back when a billion was a lot of money.

Once they have the US ruling they can stop not only US sales, but any via Ebay and it's international subsiduaries. If they succeed it may well also open the door for others like Nikon and Canon to sue YongNuo etc for infringement of their copyrights too......

If it looks like the lawsuit's going badly then stock up. Plenty of people made money buying Kodak instant cameras at jumble sales and selling them back to Kodak.....
 
never used a v5, the v4 was ****, generally with an atlas I'm looking for build quality, connectors (jack not proprietary) and the pocketwizard compatibility because they are the industry standard, also the drop down feature is kinda handy
 
Has anyone done any "real world" tests with these yet?

I've got two Calumet triggers sat in my shopping cart on their site...and I'm wondering whether to buy.

I don't want to hang around too long on this as I fully expect them to disappear from sale at some point!

Type in FLASH RAW or ISHOOTSHOWS along with PHOTTIX ATLAS and you should find some good tests :)

Hmmm...annoyingly Bristol calumet doesnt have any. Might pick up a set online to try out at the football.

How do you class real world test, I've had 8shoots with them so far :) and they've worked fine, not tested the distance yet don't quite live in a safe enough area to leave a flashgun at one end of a football field lol
 
I've used them so know they work, but it was under conditions my 602s would have worked, in fact most triggers would be hard pressed to **** up <5m apart outside on dartmoor :D
 
I'll buy one set at focus. I'll get someone to go to the other end of the NEC, and stand at the other end hitting test, asking them their hit % over the phone.

If it can manage a reliable tx over that distance, with that amount of RF rubbish floating around as all of the wifi and 3g connections etcetcetc don't disrupt it, then nothing will, and I'll go back and buy another set, as then I know that they'll work anywhere...

sure they're good though, and the NEC would be pretty much the ultimate stress test, lol...
 
Strangely my RF602's are struggling at one stadium (not triggering from roughly 20m), but fire from the other end of the pitch at another.

So, in order to see if I can get some consistency, I've ordered 2x Phottix Atlas triggers and a Flash Zebra cable...should be around 7 days before they arrive...but we'll see how they cope.
 
Yes I'd say Calumet's your best bet if you ring them up they have a twin pack for £150

The results speak for themselves...shots from my remote in The People, The Mirror, The Telegraph yesterday and today.

They are solidly built pieces of kit, and seem sturdy enough for the job. They are slightly over-enthusiastic though, for each image taken on the mkIII (triggering the remote) I was getting between 1 and 3 on the remote itself (199 frames shot on the mkIII compared to 312 frames on the remote). Definite hair-trigger when used for remote cameras!

However, I gave them a crack yesterday triggering flashes, and they work a treat. Immense range...tried them from around 100m (with my girlfriend on the phone back in the house telling me if they'd triggered!) So, 100m roughly in a built up area without Line of Sight.

Top quality...get 'em while you still can!

nice work... phone call being made tomorrow, if only to check how many they've got left, dunno how long just 80 pairs would last at focus!
 
Decided I didn't need PW compatibility and the range of the Atlas - went for the Strato instead. Massively impressed by the build and they seem reliable indoors. Looking forward to trying them under 'proper' conditions (outside) but they're looking like a good buy so far for the money.
