taking close ups of artwork in natural light, with tripod, often with macro, +/- stabilization, on Fuji S5700 at highest quality setting, I end up with pics of only 600 X 475 pixels after a bit of tinkering ( lightening, sharpness and small amount of cropping). OK, I'll lose some pixels with the crop, but where have all my other pixels gone?? Can't get pics of my paintings good enough quality to be uploaded to art galleries!!!. help?::

Could it be the crop is also reducing the DPI so the image ends up being scaled right down?

I'd definately say try not cropping at all but adjusting the image in the viewfinder or on screen. As already asked, exactly how much are you cropping?

Appreciate you guys taking the time to reply ; am taking photo as close as poss; including only a strip of background all around; end up cropping this small fillet of white background out; camera is set to give images at 7Mpix size ie 3072x2304 ( Fuji calls it "7M F"); I am using Auto sensitivity setting - perhaps I should change the sensitivity settings? but to what? As I said before, I am having to adjust brightness and sharpen a bit in editing, but surely this will not chew up pixels?

How big are the files when saved?
