Yes
I was thinking about my photography and ways to learn and improve.

I was thinking on the lines of pixels are free so click away, more pictures can help towards getting the right image but, I then started thinking. If I'm clicking away at something, am I not putting enough thought into this and ending up with a load of, at best, average pictures?

Am I thinking too much?!

Not at all, when I first switched from film to digital it took quite a while to change the mindset to the freedom to shoot several frames. However shooting willy nilly probably on motordrive is not the answer, by all means take several shots, covers the eye closed syndrome, bird posture etc, but think about why you are doing it.

Yes you are thinking too much

Stop pressing the shutter button and start thinking about why you're pressing the shutter button, firing off shots and hoping there's a good one in there isn't going to help you improve.
Don't limit yourself or anything like that because you're only wasting your own time taking shots that you delete later so it doesn't really matter, but you shouldn't need to take tonnes of shots of something when you've got a viewfinder to look through and a screen to look at.

Think about a shot.
Take the shot.
Think about what's wrong with the shot.
Take the improved shot.
Repeat.

Am I thinking too much?!

No. It's good to think.

There's nothing wrong with considering a shot, deciding that you need to shoot a quick sequence/burst to make sure you get a "moment".. but spray'n'pray is never the right way.

Shoot less, shoot better; share less, share better. That's one philosophy for photography. There are others.

I normally shoot 2 or 3 frames of a subject but alter the settings and angle slightly for each one so I get a slightly different perspective for each but generally the same subject.
The only time I use burst is at airshows while the planes are making a fast flypast.
