Hi everyone,

I'm Dean Askin, a Canadian from Toronto. I'm travelling to the UK for a little over a week, on 14 July. Arriving in York on the 15th and have a week to myself while my wife's on a chocolate course for her work.

I'll have lots of time for shooting. What are some places and things in and around York that I should plan on photographing? I'm renting a bicycle for a week, so foot and bike will be my only ways of getting around with my gear.

Any and all suggestions appreciated! If anyone in this forum is from York, maybe we could hook up for a photo walk.

I'm in York from 15 July to 22 July. Then we're off to Manchester for a few days, and maybe a day in London.

Thanks in advance, look forward to hearing from folks.

The Minister in York is very special, the Shambles - little crooked streets full of Medieval shops. Cliffords Tower is near the York Castle Museum (actually a very good museum for social history). You can genuinely stroll around anywhere in the centre of York and get some great images. Have a fab time. Oh and if you fancy a day out, Castle Howard is lovely for a stately home!

Welcome to TP Dean :)

What fidsey say - they're pretty good shouts. To be honest though, although not a massive city, there is so much to soak in you could probably spend two or three days on foot just shooting street stuff, it's that interesting a place.

If you're into trains, York has a strong connection with railways and has a great musuem to celebrate this. The rivers are a nice feature (there are the rivers Foss and Ouse) and there are some really nice bridge shots to be had. Plus, there's the defensive city walls that give great views over the city.

Will you have access to a car? If so, then the North Yorkshire Moors is well worth a day trip - you have Whitby, Slights, Robin Hood's Bay and a host of other seaside villages and towns that are very 'olde worlde' and photogenic. Whitby has an association with vampires due to Bram Stoker writing about it.

The Yorshire dales are amazing too - hilly, beautiful and there's a photo to take around every corner. Real postcard stuff :)

This should give you a starting point: http://www.visityork.org/seeanddo/

Enjoy it - it was my fave place to have a few beers with mates because it's laid-back, cultured and in Yorkshire (England's best county)

I'm about 45 minutes from York, and we're there once a month or so. Lots of good street shooting. Think 'stone' and 'wood' and you'll fill hundreds of frames as there is a lot of 'old' to the city, especially if you've never travelled to europe. I'm from the US, so a lot of the stuff here is a couple hundred years older than the US itself and some things were here before the US was discovered by Columbus. York has a strong Viking presence, so that will give you an age guideline.

Since you'll have a full week, I'd recommend spending a couple days (3 maybe) walking around York and seeing the sights. Then plan to hop on a train (bring the bike) to the the Moors. You can catch a train from York to Pickering. From there you can get the Yorkshire Moors steam train. Take it from Pickering to the far north end. Then hop on a bike and ride back to pickering through the moors. It will be a tough ride, but the land is beautiful and you'll get some great shots. And, the train rides should cost you about £15 round trip.

If you want other trips, the train will get you to Hull and the east coast in 45 minutes or so. You can go north to the Dales or even Durham. Lots of nice little trips around.

Is your wife doing the Chocolate course at Betty's? We've not done it yet, but a friend has and it is supposed to be very good.

Thanks
Rick
