Plane Spotting at Gatwick?

Hello

Would love to do some plane spotting at Gatwick Airport but unsure if it would be worthit as lots of online sites say its difficult due to viable locations and the fuzz.

I only have a 200mm lens and im not sure this is long another either.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

200mm on a crop sensor should be fine for most of the aircraft going into LGW/LHR ( Unless you like real close up shots ), that is if you are near the perimeter fence, as to the "fuzz", I've never had a problem at LHR.

And yes, Gatwick is a pain in the rear end to take photos at, but it can be done.
 
If you go at a weekend when the weather is nice you will see quite a few others doing the exact same thing especially in the summer months when there are a lot more movements. I would suggest that it might be worth carrying some ID as you will probably be stopped at some point by the local Police but they are friendly enough and more than used to people with cameras.

Also some areas of the permiter are off limits to the public and are only for staff going to and through to either their place of work or carparks. So I would suggest that you stick to where the other spotters are, some of them go on a very regular basis and know where the best spots are.

200mm should be fine for aircraft taking off and landing depending on where you are standing but you may find it a little short for aircraft that are on the ground. Having said that I have and some good shots at 17mm but it does help working the other side of the fence....:)
 
http://www.plane-mad.com/guides.php?guide=LGW if you haven't already seen it. If you're a pedestrian then it's the South Terminal car parks for you. You can also find your way out to the tunnel under the terminal and walk along the perimeter road to the fence at the end of the runway. I've often seen spotters there but I don't know if they get moved on by the police at any time. Anywhere else needs transport or some serious walking.
