Yes
It is no doubt something I should know, but I don't!
I'm sure it is quite common, but after living abroad for most of my life, I have forgotten most of these things I learnt when young.

I don't know what size they grow to, the biggest one I can see is about 6-7'

Seems to have a tap rootplant id.jpg

Looks like Elm
Or Hazel?

We do have a tot of small elms (self seeded or still suckering from long ’dead’ elms?) which are mostly only <10 ft tall.

Thanks, I think it would be elm, that is what my daughter said yesterday, but I didn't hear her :)
I first thought it was hazel, but the leaves are not as I remember them (we used to have lots and collect nuts)

Thanks

The iNaturalist app is really good for this sort of thing, backed up my peer review.

I'm for hazel. The stem colouring looks right, and the leaf bases are symmetrical wheras those of (English) elm are asymetrical. Are the red new growth stems hairy?

Another vote for hazel.

Perhaps you should have seen catkins by now if it’s hazel.

Elm flowers about now here (Yorkshire).
