What do you call that small piece of plastic that covers the hotshoe connection on the top of the camera
Mine has gone walkabouts and I would like to replace it on the D700
Any ideas where I may get one from
Thanks
Dave

It's called 'unnecessary' ;)

I never had one for my D90. The guy who sold it me must have lost it and never mentioned. I never noticed, that's how insignificant it is.

I keep the one I got with the d800, but starting to find it annoying already, having to take it off and find a place/pocket to hold it while I use hot shoe flash. I think I'll just stick it somewhere in the bag and forget about it. Don't waste your money.

I've never used one for any of the bodies I've had and never had a problem with the hotshoe. I've heard that some of the ones with various attachments on them have caused problems with shooting by making the camera thing a flash is attached though. I really don't think I'd want to pay over a fiver for a bit of plastic that doesn't really do a lot.

I bought one for my canon 60D. Purely a preference thing, plus where I live can get very dusty so it's also to prevent dust getting in, and that's not even mentioning the cat and dog hair.

Yeah to some they're a useless piece of plastic, but its worth it to me!!

It is specially designed for going walkabout.
I lose them on the first day.
and never care.

I think the main point of them is to keep the contacts clean and dry. I still have mine and rarely use hotshoe flash.
