Played with a friends Sony nex system, she said its an older one now but wow I'm amazed.

It was fast focus, great low lighting
Even in a darkish room, got, my nephew to jump of sofa, speed set to 1/100, was expecting much as my d90 wouldn't have managed a decent freeze frame at that, but wow it captured it with minimal blur

With candid shots in a light room the quality was amazing too

Is my Olympus xz-1 and d90 becoming superseded by quality user friendly compact system?

You have to remember that Sony are arguably the leaders in sensor tec at the moment and the Nex cameras have a good APS-C sensor so you really shouldn't be surprised if a Nex beats your compact camera and what is now quite on old APS-C DSLR which (again arguably) wasn't even the best of it's type in its day.

Your DSLR may compete or even better some aspects of the Nex's performance but I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Nex beats it for actual image quality.

The 16mp sensor in the Nex is the same as the one in the Nikon D7000 so yes, not surprising that it beats a compact camera and compares favourably with the D90. (Obviously there is more to a good image than just a good sensor, but it (size, quality) is still an important factor). Not sure I would describe the AF as fast though (compared to a dslr anyway) micro four thirds AF is fast, Nex AF not so much.

Nex cameras are plenty capable of decent images though:

Interesting replies

Yeah not surprised it beats my xz-1 oly, but its favourable to the d90 in terms of out of camera image quality. My 18-200 probably doesn't help. Ok the dslr is quick AF but the nex wasn't slow

Tempted to sell the xz-1 for one
See that the nex 5n on here sold for around £220 and I would hope my xz-1 fetch not too far off £200 :)

Any others I should consider compact system or compacts which would offer quick decent image quality when I don't have the dslr. Also don't want to lug d90 around on holiday with kids etc. hence why I got the xz-1, but with two young ones and always having a bag with spare clothes or nappy I can still throw in a nex :)

My sis and brother in law have Nex's and seem very happy with them. They're mainly holiday snappers and seem to be getting very good results with the kit lens and out of the camera JPEG's. Even high ISO night shots look good on the pc.

The very latest Oly MFT cameras use a Sony chip and are getting good reviews, and good feedback here too.
