Yes
so the hunt for a new lens continues. . . .
I have picked two that I like the sound of but need help choosing.
They are
Canon 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM

and

canon 70-200 f/4.0 L USM
If you could help by pointing out the pros and cons of each etc. . . . .
MANY THANKS

well I'd go for the L glass every time

not only that but I couldn't get on with trombone focussing, much prefer rotation
and if you can stretch a bit add IS - makes sooooo much difference

ok into that can I ask about a 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM?
Out of those three what would be the best?

perhaps you should say what you want the lens for
(aside from adding to your glass collection!)

Thats a good idea.
I have a canon 400d with a standard lens. I like ATTEMPTING to take pics of wildlife, flowers etc and landscapes. . . . so a bit of everything.
I know that it is likley that I will have to get more than one lens. . . . .

none of them will be much good for landscapes
400D has a "crop-factor" of 1.6 - effectively multiplies all focal lengths by that amount
so the three in your list will be ok at the long end
you may need to consider something else at the wide end

I would still go for the best glass you can
you may want to upgrade the body one day

ok thanks. I am only starting out and this was a decent camera at a good price when I got it.
I wont be able to upgrade for a while, so I guess until then I will just add kit to it!! So I guess the 70-200 f/4.0 L USM is the way forward

that's prob90 what I would do!

well. . . . . . .upto £450 I think. I live in Guernsey so anything I get is less VAT (17.5%) And sevendayshop.com is bassed here. They are very cheap in comparisson to Jessops etc

I have a 70-200 f4 L & it really is top notch glass, however there are times I wish I had IS.

If you can stretch to that or find one s/h I think its the icing on the cake.
