Please help me decide - Do i invest in the L lens i need ... OR .... a backup body?

Yes
I've been helping out a couple of event togger companies and have a number of small local shows to cover myself in the next 2 months, so here is my dilemma .........

Having got used to using the other pro toggers L lens for the equine events, and finding out out that on dull days the faster lens really does save you, I feel that I should spend my money on the 70-200mm f2.8 USM (especially with the apalling weaher we are having !)

However ...... hubby thinks i should spend it on a backup body first

Now i can't afford both at the moment, but should be able to save enough within 6 months for the other.
I know both are as important as the other - But what do you think i should buy NOW ?? :help:

Thanks
Nat x

If you're going to be getting any kind of income, I'd go for the backup body! It's more likely to suddenly die than a lens, and if you've only got one body and it stops working, that's it! Whereas if a lens dies, you can switch to another and keep shooting!

my thoughts , if you dont have a backup body then you shoot nothing , best lens in the world wont work if the body dont , less chance of a lens going 'south' than a body i would have thought :)

edit - beaten to it but echoed by Chris :)

To me it depends what the 2nd body is going to be. IF you are likely to work more in poor light I would go for the fast glass first. But if it is only the odd time invest in the body but get a upgrade from the 40d to handle better ISO settings.

I suppose i could get the 50d body only and then the ISO capabilites are much better for the dull days - i shoot mainly equestrian events outdoors but there may be some indoors over the winte - by which time i should have saved up enough

Sound like a good plan ?

I believe in backups - look at my body list!

Surely it depends on the lenses you currently own yourself. If you don't have a suitable lens, having a backup body is of little value as you may not get any shots at all worth showing anyway.

Can you either loan a lens or backup body?

Failing that, I'd get the lens and pick up a second hand body (even a 20/30/40d) which won't cost a fortune as soon as I was able (first paycheck!).

To be honest Nat I would go for the lens. As we have seen there are a lot of amateur photographers out there today and if you are covering the event to sell you need you photographs to stand out and the high quality L lens is going to do that.

I know its risky but I think there is less chance of your body going wrong compared to the bigger risk that you will not sell anything if your photographs do not look the business.

Just get that second body asap

How about a cheap second hand 400d (~£200? without lens) and hire the lens for the first two events?

Then upgrade to the 40d (or 50d) as a backup?

The 400d ain't great in low light, but it might make you feel safer
