Have a 70-200 2.8 which I love (canon)
But I have read do much good stuff on the 135mm f2 I just can't help but want one.
But what I'm wondering is if it's like any other lens I own ( apart from the 70-200) I have to stop it down. So if I have to stop the 135mm down for ultimate sharpness is there any point in buying it if ive got that focal Range and aperature with my zoom .
Or is it a case that it's so good I won't have to stop it down

the canon 135 f2 L is rated as one of the best lenses ever made
just google reviews of this fantastic lens
it's on my list of wants and must haves and must gets

135mm f/2 from fairly short experience is amazing wide open which is why most would buy one (and if I ever get another). It is also one of the sharpest at f/8, the other being 70-200 @135, so little advantage there.

This is why I'm confused , I'm I really throwing £700 at something I pretty much already have or has the 135mm got something special worth paying for

Is it worth a short hire of one (if you don't know anyone that has one that you could try) ?

At least this way it's a relative small outlay to see if it is a lens for you ?

I went through something similar when I was looking for a 300mm lens, opted to get the prime lens and am very happy I did. This was my first prime and one thing I found a bit difficult initially was the fixed focal length, but I've found it makes you think about your shot more and I can get better composition with it now...

I've read very good things about the 135 lens, but it's not a focal length I use a lot of, so not looked any further into it, but certainly think it would be if needs were

Stuart - I have had the same dilemma for ages...!
I don't like changing lenses any more than I have to and my photography (mainly kids) requires me to be able to zoom in and out lots so have never really got on with primes despite having owned 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.8, 100mm f2.8 and 135mm f2.8 Soft Focus.
Despite having just got me a Canon 70-200 f2.8 mk2 I am still tempted to get a 135 f2 just because is sounds so amazing and I want to be wowed by it but like you, there is that worry about the money side of things. For kids the 70-200 is a bit of a big lump and the 135 so small and easy, or am I talking myself into it......?
I'll be keeping my eye on this thread !
