Hello everyone, There is an event happening in London on the 12th of August, and I would like to hire a sports lens for Canon700d (preferred) and if not available, i want to hire a sports lens for my Nikon D3100. I have found many websites but all need a deposit and I am financially broke at the moment.. Would anyone like to help me and hire their lens for me in a good price for 1 day? Lens must be atleast up to 500mm or 600mm. Call me on 07442464546 or reply here! Thanks.

I can have a good guess at the answer with this being a first post and you only having been a member for 2 days.

I have a 500 f4 that I could hire to you the day. Nikon fit.

£3000 a day. Howzat sound?

What do you mean?
I'm saying that it's a bit like some random bloke in the street asking to hire your lens for the day. If I walked up to you in the street and asked if I could hire your camera off you for the day for, say, £100, would you let me have it?

I imagine, but cannot say with any certainty, that if I asked you the same question after we'd known each other through a forum for, say a year or so, with regular postings/conversations, then you may think differently.

Hire companies take deposits for a reason, and no-one in their right mind would lend a lens costing several hundred pounds to someone they didn't know with no security. Lens hire businesses are set up much better for such things.

I know. But I am hiring a lens for a day because The event is a huge football match and its only happening once. I wouldn't buy a huge sports lens for £3000-£8000 so I could use it once. A photographer in London told me to sign up on this site because people will be friendly and try to help me out! But instead, a guy says that I'm like a beggar.. I could hand in an ID or give that person my Nikon with 2 lenses just to keep him aware that I am not a (thief) :)

That's a fair enough comment, but it all comes down to a lot of trust at the end of the day.

Yeah thats true.. I have meen looking for a lens for a week now! Do you have a lens or know anybody who does? I hope you understand my situation.

Maybe thats because you have come on here begging, whoever pointed you here to borrow someone's lens knows as much as you do , very little. I am sure if its a big football match there will be plenty of professionals with proper cameras and lenses covering it so why would you need one , are you standing in the crowd ? if so you probably would not be allowed to use it. Furthermore if someone on here lent you a lens and you broke it do you think the insurance would pay out - No they wouldn't.

There's an old saying that fits well here...

Ask a silly question, Get a silly answer.

Not sure but I would think Fixation or Calumet (both in London) might take the deposit on a credit card so being cash short would not be a barrier.

Of course their risk is covering loss or damage to the hired lens...........if you borrow a lens from an individual willing to take you on trust as you are cash poor how will you recompense that person if you lose or damage the lens worth £1000's

I've lent lenses to people that I know well, but I wouldn't lend a lens to a complete stranger without some sort of security that would cover the value of the lens.
Me too, and I've borrowed as well, but that was to and from a friend I've known for 25 years.

No. Sorry. I very much doubt anyone on here would lend something of such value unless it was someone they knew well and trusted.
Oh okay.. Do you know any other hiring sites or anything that would help me out? And other thing.. If I couldnt find a lens, do you think 300mm is okay?

Don't know of any other hiring sites but whether 300mm would be enough probably depends on where you are in the ground. If behind the goal, you may need longer, but if on the touch line 300mm may be OK.

It's a BIG ask, I'd not want to borrow anything that I could not cover should something happen, why not ask the members if anyone else is attending the match? Maybe they could meet you and you could all share the moment and pictures? With the nicest wishes from me I hope someone can help, but sadly for me I'd not be willing to do so, that's what happens when humanity lets people down over the years like it has me, sadly trust has let me and my family down, good luck, hope it works out for you.

I think you'll have two main stumbling blocks tbh. One, you are a new member and so haven't built up a profile so that people know you and are happy that you can be trusted (no offence here, but basically you're asking to trust a complete stranger). And two, you admit yourself that you're broke and so if anything happened to the lens you'd not be able to reimburse the lender.

Your best bet is lenses for hire or similar.

OK as I pointed out above....but did you read it....here are links to help you out!

http://www.fixationuk.com/Fixation/Rental.html

https://calumetrental.co.uk/lenses

As I said above these are London based and should be able to help you.

For the record I have used and would recommend lensesforhire. But the ones I posted links for are likely best as you can do over the counter as far as I know which LfH does not.

Have you said what the event is and have you actually checked that you will be allowed in with a dSLR and long lens.???

How about:

1. Telling us what match it is - teams, venue, kick-off time
2. Showing us some of your previous photo work

even if you did rent/borrow/hire a lens, if its such a big event, you may find that you are not permitted to take a 'professional' camera/lens into the grounds, whereas a compact camera with a superzoom can snap away.

Thanks for the recommendation. Interestingly the OP doesn't seem to have contacted us, not even to ask whether we require large security deposits. (Answer: generally no.) I wonder why.

Nor has the OP posted or been 'here' since Monday evening......I wonder if/when he will return to update us?

What about me, any loaners of a 500mm f4? I've been here for a week now :D

I did want to buy one, and had the cash but £4100 for a Mk1 with no warantee was hard to swallow, I see a Mk2 on eBay for 6.1, then I phoned around and shops offered me 2800 in PX for a mint Mk1 and 2100 for an unseen cash deal, that put me right off!

Soo still no big prime, not that I'd need it a great deal but it's on my want in a life time list.
