I understand nothing in in photography,

but I need actor`s headshots - and I have two friends who are photographers, one has Canon EOS 450D and another has Canon 7D +18-135 (sorry if I`m misspelling - hope you`ll guess I mean:).

Assuming that the photographers` skills are equal, and that we`ll have no lighting equipment for this, just a day light (yea, I know... but still) -
what camera should I go for?

I've had a 450D, which I recently upgraded to a 550D, which uses the same 18 megapixel image sensor and metering system as the 7D.

If you're taking photos in natural light you will be much better off with the 550D / 7D. The metering system is much better and the high iso / poor light performance is vastly superior.

I suspect your ultimate choice will be down to cost. The 7D is much more expensive than the 550D, which is in turn significantly more expensive than the 450D.

Good luck, whichever way you jump.

Are you basically saying which photographer should you chose, based on kit alone?

It's an impossible question, the canon 7D is a better camera, but if the photographer doesn't know hoe to use it, the 450D could produce far superior results.

Not really a question that can be answered, if the photographer's skill is equal, they should both be able to get just as good photos as the conditions won't be pushing either of the cameras to their maximum potential. Much more down to the photographer I'm afraid!

Please don't judge your friend on their cameras! It's pretty unfair to them and their skills.

The 450D is more of an entry level dSLR but the person using it might be an amazing photographer - the 7D is more of a professional camera but in the hands of a beginner will produce some rubbish shots.

I know you said assume their skills are equal that's not going to be the case in real life - just check out their work and go with the one you prefer, regardless of their camera.

The equipment is only a small part of photography; composition, posing and processing all make a much bigger impact on the end result... things that one of your photographer friends might be better at than then other.

The owner of the 450D doesn't seem to have a lens but the 7D owner at least has a 18-135mm. That lens wouldn't be my first choice for anything but I suppose it's better than no lens at all so I'd pick that photographer.

I hope that helps. :)

My assistant Tony can take a better picture than I can using a canon 5d using his plastic
35mm Diana camera (with which he is amazingly creative).
