I am a Scottish student so if I had money (which I don't! I would not want to spend it!) But I am looking for a second body. The main reason I want a second body is so I can have two mounted lenses to hand with out having to change over in the Park, pub or where ever I am!

I thought I wanted a Fuji S3. But I have just found out that I don't own high enough quality glass for it to work properly. I have tried the Nikon D2H but the ISO at 1600 was genuinely shocking.

I can't afford a D2Hs or D90, ideally I want to spend around £250 on the second hand market. I really like my D60 but I want

A screw driver motor! I REALLY REALLY want a screw driver motor!
small increments of ISO rather than the D60s double or nothing.
A couple more AF points
A portrait shutter button would be nice but not essential!

What about cameras like the D50 or D70? I notice I can get them for about £150ish which is always appealing!

Cheers Stuart

I've had both the D50 and the D70s, and my personal favourite was the D50. Would be tempted again! But, only the D70/s has the 1/3 incrememnts in ISO, both have 5 area AF, however if you want an extra shutter button, you'll have to get a grip. Only the Pro D3s+ have the portrait button. I didn't think they were bad at high ISOs either, thuogh again I think the D50 had a slight edge over the D70/s. :)

Could truly recommend the D50 as a 2nd body - had that before I bought my D80 and in a way, I wish I had never sold my D50. The focussing was spot on and I loved the solid grip that gave a really sturdy feel to the camera.

I don't know about that. Sounds mighty strange and sounds something too familiar to pixel peeping. *Off to research it!*

Well you will get extra points for telling me I can have a S3 because its the camera I really want! :D

Did Nikon ever make a "proper" battery grip for the D70? So that you can half depress the shutter button? or is it just that IR remote rubbish?

And can ethier the D50, D70 or S3 talk to my SB-600 using the on board flash?

Cheers Stuart

I doubt you could go that wrong with a D70s or D50.

If you are wanting really "cheap" hunt out a silver D50 body as these seem to be less appealing than the black body.

Best still is that both have built in focusing motors so you can use older Nikon Lenses, D40, D60, D3000 and D5000 all need AF-S lenses or its manual focusing.

Good used D80's are going reasonably cheap these days Stuart.

Cheers for the comments guys.

I think the D50 sounds like the best way to go. but if there is a cheap D70 I would not say no! :D

Stuart

Make sure its a D70s (the s is important) in that it has a bigger rear screen (but still small by todays standards) and more importantly it has a connection for a wired remote shutter release. The D70 only had the option of an IR remote :(

D70(s) supports commander mode (Wireless) for Nikon flashguns (something that i have noticed is missing from the D5000  )

the d50 wont talk to the sb600 ,,,not sure but i think the 70 will .(ive got a feeling the d50 was the first digital slr from nikon that didnt need a firmware update ) useless fact if its true

there are a few d70s's fyling about on the classifieds. also if it was me i would go to a shop and try out the d90 which should have the same dimensions as the d70s and so you can get a proper feel of the camera.

My thinking is that the smaller number of pixels will reduce the noise?

I think the D80 would be a waste of money because its exspenive and I will want to replace it. at least the D50 is cheap and I will want to replace it!

Mind you jessops are letting you pay for a D300s over 12 months!:naughty:

No, the D70/s has a fairly noisy sensor above 800ISO. I never really bothered over 640.

The D200 isn't stunning (compared with the D300 for example) in this respect either but it is much better than the D70.

The way Jessops are going the credit agreement might outlast them. Shame that it's a finance co behind the deal!

Remember I'm shooting with a D60. So can you please compare it to a D60! I keep the Noise reduction on all the time with my camera. :D

I've got a flash gun so ISO isn't the be all and end all

Cheers Stuart

You won,t regret buying a D50.It is very good at high ISOs and generally punches well above its weight. If you can put up with the small rear screen you won,t be dissapointed.I bought a D300 in October but my D50 is going nowhere.

I couldn't find much on the S5 / lens' issue. I would put it down to pixel peeping as the S5 was highly rated even as a kit form with the 18-70mm AF-S. But, as your in the UK I think buying second from an established US retailer (using the exchange rate) would be beneficial. Have a look through the second hand store here or here.

Cheers I don't think I need to order from the states. by the time customs have had it. it will have been more trouble than its worth.

Learned on my D50 (selling it here in the US at the moment). I can tell you it's one gutsy little camera. You can take much better shots than you might think. Having the focus motor built-in also helps as you never have to think, "Will this lens AF on my camera?"

I will say the high ISO performance is, well, not HORRIBLE but not great either in low light situations. I can shoot ISO 800 in a (reasonably lit) gym but still have to run Noise Ninja to get rid of the noise. If you're not shooting in low light situations (or using a flash) this is not an issue.

It will with well with the SB-600 (got one of those as well). You should be able to find them inexpensively-enough. I'd pm you about mine but I'm in the US but the shipping would not make it worth it.

Good luck!
