Just been into currys to buy just a 50mm f/1.8 canon lens.

but couldn't resist and have brought a canon 70d with 18-55mm lens! Im now enjoying myself looking for accessories to buy for it!

Nice purchase though not what I would have chosen but its not what I require. :D

But yes it has happened to the best of us (y)

no didn't fall for the rubbish that they tell you! I have been thinking about getting a 70d for a few weeks, and just picking one up in the shop made me want it!
 
To be honest I had been looking at them on eBay as they seem a fair bit cheaper, but after reading on hear about import camera equipment I thought its a lot of money to spend, so would rather pay a bit more and know that i have got the 2 year canon warranty!

I get buyers remorse too. Tends to pass pretty quickly these days though :)

I have always felt like that, I often think I should have spent the money more wisely. When I go into the shop checking stuff, I tend not to take any cash or cards. Salesman will always say there is an offer on, and it ends as soon as I walk out the door. Never fell for that one.

Currys? They are the worst camera retailer I've ever experienced. Lately, I've seen my local Curry's camera section shrink down to only a few DSLR and 2 mirrorless, making way for fitness smart bands.......

John Lewis is where it's at :D I went to numerous Currys to test Fuji X-T10, none had any. At Stratford JL, I asked and the camera sales person opened a brand new box and attached it as their display camera. Just for me :D

With that display of good faith, I proceeded to buy £1600 worth of Fuji lens from JL. Total £2 more expensive than camerapricebuster's lowest, but I get 2 years warranty. Everyone's a winner :D
 
Not to big Currys up, they are not really a camera retailer. They display and sell what's hot and selling at the time. We have a relatively large Currys / PC World store in our town and they do have a good range of cameras. DSLR, mirrorless and P&S.

More photos are taken on mobile phones these days so they aren't going to stock every camera model in the hopes that one or two may sell to the odd enthusiast.

Which is odd as the parent company which is Dixons started out as exactly that.

That's probably why they're still in business, when so many of the specialised camera retailers are not..


Isn't the "Dollond" in Dollond & Aitchison the High Street opticians Dollond & Co which was a specialist optics and lens manufacturer once upon a time?

The failure of most camera specialists to adapt to the opportunities offered by the internet was the cause of their failure.

Many have not just survived the internet but are successful because of it - WEX, Calumet, Park, Clifton, LCE, Ffordes, Harrison, Mathers, Bristol, Dale, etc.

We have a newish Currys Superstore near us and theres a good guy there on the camera section. Over the last six - nine months or so the stock has gone terrible and I asked why and he stated " the camera manufactures dont come in to update their stands anymore" I thought it a bit strange really, as a company that size should have the means of stocking their own shelves and making their store more presentable and welcoming as the stands are just empty.

They just seem to ram the aisles with the cheapest TV's in there now and other current craze Tat as mentioned above. Carry on like this and they may do a Comet.
 
It's common for manufacturers to maintain their own displays.

But remember, Currys/Dixons/PCW are now just another version of Argos - their customers compare products online, compare prices online, buy online and only come into store to collect if they're not having it delivered.

The only person that walks into a DSG store is either a tyre kicker, so desperate for something they must have it now regardless of price (the tv broke down 10 mins before kick-off), or they're looking for the cheapest item on the shelf. There are very few "serious" customers walking through the door anymore. For some models/categories of product it's probably not worth unpacking a display model - because anyone that wants it won't need to see it.

The Currys in Speke retail park have moved recently, they moved into a big premises that was used by comet. When I went in, it felt like I was going into comet :eek:
 
I bought my 35mm 1.8 DX from Currys/PCWorld a couple of weeks ago only because i knew what i wanted and could go get it the very same day, plus they were cheaper than Jessops.
 
Currys prices and John Lewis prices are similar, I would opt to buy item from John Lewis. Advantage from buying from John Lewis I think.

The best bit about this is you don't seem to have bought the ;end you went in for/ I dread to think what you'll end up with when you return to get the 50.

I did also get the 50mm lens while I was there! Just need to learn how to use it all! Lol
 
Lol there are some funny views of Currys out there , DSG Retail which is the company your talking about is now the largest in the sector incorporating PC World Carphone Warehouse and Currys, its not and has not been for decades a Camera shop and the majority of its customers still walk in through the doors and by from advice in the stores from the salespeople. The salespeople undergo training much like any other company and it covers a wide range of products so you may only get one person in a whole store who has a specialist knowledge of photography for instance.

On the whole most people including some who are whining on here are now happy to buy online as its cheaper and the wonder why there is less stock in large retailers. Why do you think a business would give up floor space to a product that sells one a month ( a high end dslr ) in place of a product with a much higher margin which sells dozens ( a Fitbit for example )? the reason Currys as you call it is still going is because it diversified its business model to match the consumer and what people want to buy right now is big Tvs and the latest gadgets phones pads laptops fitness etc etc.

There is still to my mind a place on the high street for small camera shops but only if people are willing to pay a little premium for it but that in general is not the case, at lot in fact would happily walk into a small camera shop and waste their one and only sales assistants time viewing and demo'ing a product to then go and buy online cheaper !
 
Any recommendations for a good North London camera store (hopefully also Fujifilm specialised) that isn't Currys and John Lewis, also have easy car access and parking?

I don't go into the city often, despite living near it. There doesn't seem to be any independent camera stores near where I live :( apart from a terribly managed Currys.

I'd love to support small camera stores but my experience is that they are tied to a limited number of brands, often to a single brand for a given product type. For example they will sell Olympus but not Panasonic or Fuji, Canon but not Nikon, Manfrotto but not Gitzo. Consequently their advice is exceedingly limited.

Take a drive north to WEX in Norwich, you could combine it with a day out on the coast.. other than the "north London" requirement, it fits the bill - easy parking and they usually have the full Fuji X range in stock and on the demo counter.

(just don't go there looking for good used prices - for some reason WEX are very expensive for used gear)

Haha, 120 miles one way........

Although I do currently have a load of Canon gear I need to sell. Might give it a go this weekend, if wife is up for this "coast trip". Thanks
