I picked up a used 2x mkII extender yesterday for a bargain £149 from London Camera Exchange. I've been after longer range at football matches for shooting managers from the opposite side of the pitch, or the goal at the other end.
After a quick bit of zeroing in with my 300 2.8 (which front focuses consistently), the results are actually much better than I though they'd be. There's very little reduction in image quality - just a slight softness which can be taken out with a bit of sharpening, and a bit of contrast being required.
I used the combo today in anger for the first time today at QPR v Newcastle and it worked very well, giving me a 600 f/5.6 lens in a very compact package. I really like the flexibility of being able to switch to a 420 f/4.0 with my 1.4x extender, and then back to the "naked" 300 f/2.8. I was using it on a 1DIV so have plenty of room to manouver the ISO up as required. It'll be a different kettle of fish under floodlights, but still very usable I think (though not so hot on my 1DIII).
So, definitely a nice little addition to the kit list.
