Pocket wizards and Wireless Shutter Release gadgets

Quick, uneducated question that will hopefully prompt a reasonably simple response (so I can understand it ;))

I'm fancying a remote shutter release as I have some group photos coming up that I need to be on too. I was tempted by the 'Hahnel HW 433 C80 Wireless Release' on offer at Jessops at the moment.

However, looking at it, I can't see how you can wire it to use a flash at the same time.
I have a 550 Speedlight and some studio heads that I'd want to use at the relevant times.

So, the question is, can this remote shutter release be used with an external flash or is it a different gadget I need, if so what. I've been trying to get my head around some of the PW threads but they're a bit beyond me at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It will probably be late tomorrow before I can pick this up again.

You'd need 3 pocket wizards and a remote trigger cable for your camera.

The wireless release attaches to your camera's remote release socket. You can mount the receiver in the hotshoe, but it doesn't actually use the hotshoe connectivity. You can just leave the receiver dangling.

The remote flash triggers generally work use the hotshoe connection.

You can use both at the same time and you would have the option of using the cheaper flash trigger alternatives to PWs.

You could do it with Pocket Wizards, but it will cost you a rocket.

For a fraction of the cost, you can do exactly the same thing with the Yongnuo RF-602. You will need one transmitter which you hold in your hand for the self portrait/groups, and a receiver unit plugged into the remote release socket. Then a second transmitter in the camera hot-shoe (set to a different channel) that will then fire any number of flashes equipped with receivers.

Flash In The Pan sells them here post #2 http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=157807 Transmitter/receiver set £28 and extra receivers £17.50. I've got five of 'em :) You can do the whole shooting match for less than the cost of one Pocket Wizard.

Don't forget though chaps the studio heads should have inbuilt slaves so one PW in your hand to fire the camera remotely, one EX on camera and your slaves picking up the flash.

2PW's? Anyone want to have a go at that idea because it IS purely theoretical. I've not tried it! :)

Hi guys.

Thanks for the replies. The promo photo is quite confusing to the remote newbie.

I've previously sussed how to fire the studio flashes using the speedlight so one of these gizmos and a speed light should do the trick, yes?

PS - I'm looking at the Flash thread now
