Am I right in thinking that Pocketwizards can be used for remotely firing cameras as well as flashes?

Pocketwizard Plus II or Pocketwizard Multimax?

Do I need anything else (cables etc)?

Best place to buy?

Hmm, where is cherryrig to sell you Skyports ;) (assuming they can do the same job)


Seriously though I beleive that PWs can fire the camera (I don't know if they all can or just one model can I'm guessing google can help). I beleive all you'll need is the appropriate cable to plug the PW into your camera remote fire socket

Did a bit of research on this recently for some equine stuff. My understanding is that they do both. On the multi max version you press the test button and it fires the camera for you.

You are right, both the Multimaxes and the PlusIIs can fire the camera, if you have a Sekonic meter with the radio chip fitted you can use that too.

You will need a cable to connect the PW to the camera, for official PocketWizard ones are expensive, but I think it is something to do with keeping the camera awake, I'm not sure if there are setting to get around this so you can use one of the cheaper cables...
 
Bob, thanks for that info, I'm looking to use them for equine work as well. I have a series of shows coming up where there is only one fence. What I'm looking to do is have a remote camera set up to cover that fence (probably with a wide angle lens) but also shoot the fence from a different angle using a second body and 70-200mm, I am hoping that when I fire the camera the Pocketwizards will fire the second body. Does that make sense? :D :thinking:

It makes sense. You want to use your D3 (Grrrrr!) as a command camera which you will use as normal which is also the trigger with a pocket wizard to fire your remote.

I am not sure if the PW will support that or not but a quick email to Pocket Wizard HQ may help.

They are a bit pricey but I reckon will produce some interesting shots. I was going to combine the magic arm and put my Sigma 10-20 on one body for a show jump as well. I have not seen to much done like this for event photography.

hi hacker, if it helps the skyports will do it as well i think, you just need the cable with the switch in to keep the shutter button halfpressed, then they will fire. not tested it though.
 
Thanks Bob, I've fired off the question to Pocketwizard, I'll let you know what they say. The main reason for this is that I want to fire two cameras simultaneously and I haven't been able to find the answer yet.

What's a magic arm btw? :thinking:

Setting up a remote camera.

A OverXposed Grond plate ( www.overxposed.com ). A slik Pro Ball Head.

A Nikon DR-4 right angle view finder ( makes it easier to look through the camera )

A N90M3-P Nikon Pre-Release trigger cord that will connect the camera to a
Pocket Wizard Multi Max transceiver...digital cameras usuall go to sleep if not
activated. The N90M3-P cord will keep the camera awake.

Excellent weblink Paul - thanks for putting that up.

Does the N90M3 cord sap the batteries if it is keeping the camera awake. I am just thinking ahead if you set your camera up at an event and can't get access to it it for 3 or four hours?
 
The only drawback to this mode of operation is that the battery life of the camera is extremely diminished. This is due to the power required to keep the camera awake.
