So here is a fresh Poems and Pictures thread as the original was getting over large!

The idea is simple - if you have a favourite poem or set of lyrics and an image that suits the words please post it here - whether the words are your own or someone else's.

If you want to catch up with the first thread of stunning shots from this forum coupled with poems and lyrics that complement those images then it can be found here: Poems and Pictures

To kick off this new thread I'm pleased to post this lovely image by DonnaM (with thanks) and some words by my brother.

{Donna's image has been moved - need a fresh one :)}

The Forest

While here I see the world anew
Through shimmering of morning dew,
The forest conjures pleasant ease
Where breezes sing around the trees
And etched on bark of evergreen
Great evidence of time is seen
From well worn branches down to roots,
An atmosphere of calm that suits.

If Proserpine could know this place
A smile would surely light her face,
Here colours of the oak and larch
Are equal to the rainbow's arch.
A secret told is made to keep
Yet visit once this woodland deep
You'll hear old spirit voices sigh,
A rustle from the leaves on high.

The ripples of a flowing stream
Add to the feeling of a dream,
Red squirrels play and here you'll find
There is a path that tends to wind,
On either side so very near
An ancient sylvan atmosphere,
A world apart with different ways,
I hope the forest always stays.

  What a great start to thread 2 John.

Thanks John and Charlie - I'm hoping others will add their own words and images as well - I know there are some poets on this forum :)

Dark Star ... Dark Horse
A poet among the masses - what a breath of fresh air.

Lovely pic and had to check out my mythology too.
Well done

Thanks I can take no credit for the words though - more often than not I post my brothers poems - he's the one with talent! (y)(y)

Two images, one poem, one story: Perseus and Andromeda

Images by John (JGS001) for which he has my thanks! Words by my bro Bob the poet!

The images are the Mirfak Association from the constellation Perseus and the nearby (I think :)) Andromeda Galaxy - I hope you enjoy them and the poem!

Perseus & Andromeda

Andromeda was a cruel sacrifice
Chained to an ocean rock,
Destined to die and cold as ice,
Shackled there by a lock.

Her family did a deal with a God,
Poseidon the King of the sea,
Abandoned she was where nobody trod
And offered as charity.

They'd chosen this place for they understood
Amid the deep foaming roll
A monster lurked and they hoped it would
Devour Andromeda whole.

But Perseus at the same time rode
High on a flying horse;
Over the tides white Pegasus strode
And carried him straight on course.

He'd conquered Medusa who had eyes
That turned all that lived to stone,
Her head in a pouch, his most cherished prize
A Gorgon he'd killed alone.

And as he returned through skies above
Where windy spirits blow
That hero observed the one he'd love,
Andromeda far below.

Now Perseus guessed he must act fast
So his steed galloped downwards there,
Intending to set her free at last
He noticed her body was bare.

But right at the time of her release
The behemoth, it arrived
The fangs of the beast destroyed the peace,
How madly it roared and writhed.

He tackled the foe and as she watched
Her heart was an empty flagon,
The battle it raged but her fears were scotched
When Perseus slayed the dragon.

He gazed in her eyes, unlocked each chain
Then gave her a longing kiss
Which ended the loneliness and pain
And melted her heart with bliss.

On Pegasus as they flew away
The crown of the gold sun shone,
Brave Perseus held the reins that day
With Andromeda holding on.

From then evermore they felt a fire
That nobody once could sever,
Their chamber at night produced desire,
Two lovers in love forever.

Although they are gone, in space they are
Still full of divine elations
For Perseus & Andromeda star
As beautiful constellations.

Thanks John, they work well with that Poem, and Bob has done it again . The constellations of Perseus and Andromeda are nearly touching. Mirfak is the Alpha (brightest) star in Perseus, the Andromeda Galaxy is one of the most famous objects in the Andromeda constellation.

Here's a poem and a cartoon that might raise a smile :) Our resident cartoonist Ian_DJ obliged with the picture based on one of Bob's more humourous odes :)

Well it made me chuckle - Thanks Ian :)

Ernest Bloggs

Though Cyrano de Bergarac
Had one that was a whopper,
A chap called Ernest Bloggs way back
Possessed the true chart topper.

For Ernest had a stunning nose,
A Guinness Record conk,
What decibels came with the blows
When he gave it a honk.

Reverberating loud it blared
If ever he would pump it
And fans of orchestra declared
He'd outdone every trumpet.

Compared to Concorde and as well
The tower known as Eiffel,
In truth it's awesome size and swell
Resembled John Wayne's rifle.

With swimming Ernest couldn't cope,
If he did not capsize
It looked just like a periscope
Or Nessie on the rise.

At drinking beer he'd always fail,
He used to choke and cough,
His snout dipped in each pint of ale
Then came up soaked in froth.

Each disadvantage used to grow
And Ernest was no suitor
For girls they tend to turn and go
When they see such a hooter.

But Ernest felt secure inside
Without a grudge because all
The ones who laughed and acted snide
Weren't blessed with his great shnozzle.

And then he met a passive rose,
A friendly sort called Mandy
Who told him that his massive nose
Some night could come in handy.

In time they wed and had a kid
Conceived in hot Majorca,
Who by the way inherited
Another nasal corker.

Pinocchio was proud of his
And Ernest too was cool,
The moral of the story is
Don't worry, looks aren't all.

Now when old Ernest met his fate
His coffin was unique;
It's shape built to accommodate
His quite enormous beak.

:D

:D good poem again John, made me smile. Good picture to Ian.

:D Glad to have been of service, John. That cartoon does accompany the poem very nicely, even if I may say so. :)

Ta Ian and John - not sure that a photograph would have been easy to do ;)!

Actually, I had thought about taking a side profile of my face and apply a bit of photoshop to my nose (I do have a large conk) but I don't think it would be too flattering! :D
Anyway, keep those poems and pictures coming in. Shall return to this thread when I am short of inspiration. :)

Not quite appropriate, but what the hell - it did remind me of this Robert Frost poem

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Great poem Chuck thanks for posting - I love those last lines

2008 on TPF

As this year ends on TPF
I thought I'd write a rhyme
To summarise 08 for you
To while way the time

Thinking back on whats occurred
It's hard - so much has passed
But lets have a crack, no turning back
So this should be a blast

Some records reached on TPF
A million posts were posted
The user numbers they went up
Beyond 11k we coasted

At the very start of 2008
365s were done by most
But oh my god - look what we got!
Bod’s face with every post

With the comp no longer anonymous
The entries they did soar
Pitstop led the race throughout
Her pictures never poor

Some names are more familiar now
With way too many to mention
A name check for every bugger here
Was never my intention

But some shone out and made their mark
Like Edinburgh Gary
He made the news, give him his dues
He's no Tom **** or Harry

And Toothie and her Wall-E pics
Made everybody laugh
But mint's dead cow with ribs and all
Made everbody barf!

Monkeh made it round the world
From Mexico to Cologne
A stop off in Toronto too
He made it on his own

As ever great debates have caused
A ruction near and far
Gay Weddings, Fireworks, Glamour too
And of course damn HDR

And macro shots have hit the heights
By Alby and Macro Junkie
And the outer space shots by James and John
Have really been quite funky!

And Sawman's reds and CT's birds
Thrilled all of us to bits
But I think the shots we loved the most
Were of Janice's perky squirrels!!! :naughty:

Betty's beauty hit the spot
A brave and thoughtful thread
Matt Sayle got published hip hooray
It didn't go to his head!

Meets of course took place this year
At Camden, the North and farther
The winds blew hard on Blackpool beach
(or was that just the lager)

New mods came on to join the rest
Joe T and Lemon James
No harm has come though its a great relief
We ain't gone down in flames!

And two mods waved goodbye year
Moomike and CT
They have our thanks for work well done!
And they did it all for free!

And goodies sold by TPF
All great! There's nothing crap!
Warm fleeces and those calendars
And a lovely logoed strap!

And a recent scrap in thread and post
Caused uproar and a call
For a place to post "no-crit-please" shots
Hence "Fluffy Kittens and Cotton Wool"

And all the while its great to know
The forum's always there
For comment, laughs and good advice
There's none that can compare

So on that note I wish you well
08's one to remember
A good new year to TPF
And every single member!!! (y)

:D

 What a great way to wind out the year. Merry Christmas John (and everyone else too).

Ok not one of my best images, but this is definately one of the best poems i have ever come across........ written by John Macrae in 1915, a part of it can be found inscribed on a plaque on the side of Eilean Donan castle in the north west highlands.....

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

You undersell the image Fiona its lovely and very appropriate to the touching poem! :)

the original image of the forest is amazing, any chance of a high res copy ? :D

I love your poems also, they are great to read :)

Combat Squirrel cheers - the image is DonnaM's best PM her for a copy! :)

Most the poems I post aren't mine I'm afraid but my brother's as is the next one :)

For the Londoners on the forum - an ode to pie and mash!

Pic by me (Manze's pie and mash shop in Walthamstow) and words by my bro :)

The Pie & Mash shop

The Pie & Mash shop beckoned,
Before fast food came here
Us Cockneys never reckoned
Another meal came near.

A friendly place to pause where
The service never stopped
With smooth tiles on the walls there
And tables marble topped.

Two scoops of mash, the best treat
There's nothing quite as nice,
Those pies contained the best meat,
Our local paradise.

That gorgeous parsley liquor
Upon the crust they'd pour
And if you liked it thicker
They'd pour a little more.

How simple yet it still is
My dream with benches placed,
The vinegar with chillis,
The salt and pepper taste.

A part of London's deep pride
But now they've nearly gone;
From Lambeth to the north side
Their old front windows shone.

The food that used to shape me,
Not caviar for fops,
One plate for fourpence 'ape'nee,
Our Pie & Mash was tops.

 Brilliant. Brilliant shot, brilliant words. It took me back years when I used to go in there every Saturday!

A silent time has come here

No songbird seems to come near,
No flowers grow this way,
A silent time has come here,
The peaceful hours hold sway.

Bold signs kept up pretences
And claimed Arbeit Macht Frei,
Behind these barbed wire fences
That promise was a lie.

Although not to a battle
The beating drum, it thrived;
In trains designed for cattle
The victims, they arrived.

Here children knew no laughter,
No toys or lucky charms
But kept forever after
Tattoos upon their arms.

Nobody had committed
A single crime or slur
Yet no life was permitted
Because of who they were.

They wandered with gaunt faces
At Auschwitz through the war,
They wandered in these places,
Treblinka, Sorbibor.

Injustice points a finger,
Released from sad unease
Contented voices linger
That call us on the breeze.

Our friends are over yonder
Free of the beating drum
And where they used to wander
A silent time has come.

Emotive capture. B&W is perfect. The poem is beautifully poignant. It doesn't shout in a political voice but talks of mans inhumanity and hypocrisy in hushed tones that resound loudly in your head!

A haunting poem with a haunting image which should make us all pause for a few minutes in our busy lives and reflect on what happens when the thirst for power and domination becomes a blood lust which knows no bounds.

John, Thank you to Bob for his words and Phil for the image. Very sobering.

Jean

Maureen, Jean thanks for your comments - I found this one really moving I must say - I shall pass your words onto Bob.

On a lighter note now :) This is one of the best Robin images I've seen and I thank Janice for allowing me to use it to accompany this little ode (usual author:))

Robin_inquisitive.jpg

Ode to a robin

Tiny in a world of white
Robin here you are,
Rest a while from weary flight,
Have you journeyed far?

Never stranded, well defined
With scarlet like a beacon,
Lightly landed, crumbs you find
To exercise your beak on.

Happy in the crystal snow,
Very busy sifting,
Unaware that your bright glow
We find so uplifting.

Farewell robin, as you flew
Something in me stirred
Sensing beauty, thanks to you
Little winter bird

From the beauty of the Robin to a bit of creepy darkness :)

Self penned this time - written a few months ago :D The scary (and hairy :)) eye is mine!

Paranoia

I see a set of circumstances
And wonder what they mean
I hear and read some words to me
And then read in between

I'm adding one and one and one
And end up getting four
I'm told there's nothing going on
But think there's something more

I ponder phrases used and said
And interpret them again
I think of things that came to pass
And it drives me half insane

A look, a glance, a casual word
A change in what you did
A difference in activities
Is there something that you hid?

I check the times and movements
Of the people that I know
I wonder what they're doing now
And wonder where they go

And all the time I wonder why
I have to think this way
And wonder just what happened
When did things change, what day?

And then when lying wide awake
Just thinking in the night
My mind it clears the truth appears
I know that I am right!
