No
something for the wife's bag who isn't in to photography to take snap of new born and toddler when out.

the canon sx220 catches my eye, seems to get good reviews and good range.
as it's something i'll use on days out i wouldn't mind getting something better quality if it is and still value for money (would consider used).

Canon S95, Olympus XZ-1 etc. get good reviews at the higher end compact. But will there be any significant differences marked when these and and the sx220 are taken on full auto?

For what it's worth, I bought a (Canon elph 310 hs) for a pocket camera when I went on vacation last November and it's literally a pocket camera. It is so small but don't let that full you. I was so pleasantly surprised on how well it performed (for a point in shoot). You might want to check that one out. Btw, I'm from the u.s. so it might be called something different where you are. I'm sure it will come up in google though.
