A friend is looking for a camera for good macro work, mainly to use in photographing computer components on mainboards, such as blown capacitors or malicious damage caused by over enthusiastic users.

He's looked at the Canon SX120 as it has a 1cm minimum focus distance which I assume would be good?

Budget is upto £200 has to be new so no cheap 2nd hand DSLR suggestions

Any pointers or advice appreciated in advance.

Well from a nikon user no idea. Another thread on here suggests a macro sigma lens for canon may be available in the buy n sell section

depends how close they would need to go and how sharp the picture.

Personally the 105mm f2.8 macro on the nikon does mist of my needs.

Check for a low f number and preferably a 1:1 pic ratio. Real life size or closer. :)

otherwise it would be a combo of macro lens and extension tube.
Or macro lens and a magnifying filter.

It needs to be new so cant purchase a DSLR under £200
one camera i would suggest under £200 is the canon s5 is it has macro up to one mm have a look http://http://www.dpreview.com/news/0705/07050703canons5is.asp

Cheers bud will check it out.

The panasonic range do very well with a raynox adaptor, or I used a canon s3 (which was replaced by the s5) before getting a dslr. If you look on my flickr, the earliest shots in macro/abstract were taken with the s3.
