Point and shoot for the other half?

Hi all,

I'm looking at getting my girlfriend a decent point and shoot for Christmas. She's a little into photography and has a good eye for it, but doesn't want to get into it fully. She currently doesn't own a digital camera (uses her iPhone 4S), and I was wondering what would be a good point and shoot to get her for around £200? I'm not clued up on the point and shoot world but I'm guessing a Canon or a Nikon would be one of the best choices for that too?

I think good zoom would be an important, but not most important, feature to have. I'd like it to be one that produces natural colours and decent sharpness too.

Any advice will be appreciated :)

Canon S100, £209 including delivery from DigitalRev... I just ordered one this morning! Its fully pocketable and the best camera you can buy in its form factor.
 
I would tend to agree on the canon powershots

Got one for SWMBO and she is very happy, has some decent scene modes and some manual adjustments can be made. She has it in Auto all the time, but I tend to tweak in P mode on occasion using it as a backup if we are on holiday and I forget the spare batteries for my own camera!
 
I'd say a Canon S*** series is for someone who wants to take things a bit more seriously, because it sacrifices zoom range and loads of scene modes for sensor size and RAW capture. They also keep the pixel count down to try and keep noise under control.

For a quality point and shoot I'd think of Fuji's and Panasonic's.

The Fuji F*** series seem to be quite clever in changing sensor options to reduce noise when needed. They have a pretty good zoom range too.

The Panasonic TZ** series have very good Leica lenses, as most Panasonic's have. They are especially good at Macro from a few that I've seen. A friend has a Panasonic TZ20 and she loves it.

If it's not a surprise present, then you may be able to get here handle some options to see what she would prefer. :shrug:

If it is a surprise, then you could try going into a shop and seeing if she's attracted to any, if that is the type of things that she wouldn't get suspicious of. ;)
 
A good eye for a photo but doesn't want to get into it - continue to use the iPhone and spend the money on something else?

I should probably say my other half's camera is a more modest A1100 IS
No RAW mode, some scene modes and some manual control but very simple to use. The wife liked it because of auto mode and compared to camera phone in deals with her shakey hands pretty well, 99% of her previous Samsung mobile's pictures were deleted
 
I'm in same boat wanting a point and shoot for my wife, was set on getting an s100 but an concerned it will be to advance for her!!
Does anybody have any thoughts on the Sony cybershot dsc-hx20v!! I saw it was 2nd in a top 20 compacts behind the s100!!!
 
Thank you for all of your suggestions. Both the S100 and TZ20 look ace. The Panasonic is tending to sway me a bit more if I'm honest. Will have to have a try on them in a shop and are which I like better
 
My wife is a better photographer than me, however she isn't too happy about the weight of the d300 + lens...

I got her the gf3 plus 20mm pancake... (and default kit lens).
She doesn't use it much, but the quality is great.

I can vouch for the tz series (had a 3 but it got stolen got her the 5 for the zoom and fits in your pocket - so the 20 should be a good buy).

Not sure there is a site with image quality for cameras, might be worth a google to see. That would give you some other contenders.
