Well I lent my GF my P&S only to have it broken :bang: On the plus side my D300 is still safe and she will never be touching that

It looks like the camera was dropped on the lens assembly and it will now not move and puts an error message on the screen.

It is a Canon Ixus 65 and is a couple years old now but was still a cracking camera.

Not alot to see really, so no picture.

Whats my best move on this? Can I get it repaired cheaply do you think? Or do I have to send it off to Canon and face a mega repair bill?

Insurance??

What he said ^

Or as you say, massive Canon bill.

insurance and if you have a new for old policy then you get a better P&S to boot.

Think for what it would cost to repair you could nearly buy a new one anyways

Sounds like bin-fodder unfortunately, but before chucking it try giving it a thump, you might just jar the lens free....

New for Old means the insurance company replaces your item with the nearest current model rather than giving you the money that your old item is technically worth second hand and after wear and tear.

One thing I would say - check how your claim will affect your next renewal and obviously how much your excess is - it may be more cost effective to just buy a new camera yourself rather than make a small claim that will bump up your premium.

You would also need to have accidental damage cover included on your policy to claim for this.

Unfortunately they're often just not cost effective to repair, and has been pointed out, claiming on your insurance can be prohibitive both with the excess and losing "no claims".

It may be just a case of chucking it in the nearest bin and moving on. In the great scheme of things it's no big deal. Don't let it spoil your Christmas!

She tried to hide it from me for a while

For £13 I will try getting the bits from Polish Ebay, if that fails then I will bin it. I have had the front and back casings off and it looks like a fiddly one to do. Oh well. Could have worse problems to deal with!

Moan and maker her guilty, she can buy a new one.

From experience what the others above say is true, unless you have VERY friendly insurance, it will cost more to claim than buy a new one. Pick up a new one in the sales.

To be honest I very rarely use a P&S since I got a 'proper' camera. I am also to nice a person to put a guilt trip on

Will have a crack at fixing it myself first. Can't be any harder than fixing mobile phones.

Bit fiddly to do, you will probably need to desolder a few wires as well, nice flat surface, big tray is best, covered with white paper, and take plenty of pics, much better than your memory.

Dave.
