Has anybody had any lenses professionally polished to remove light scratches or attempted to do so themselves?

Whilst I wouldn't bother with the front glass, the rear element can make the focus quite soft.

I have a couple of lenses like this (20mm and 24mm) and Nikon wanted £600 to replace the glass. It would be cheaper to buy them again.

Just wondered if polishing was possible.
 
No. You'd take all the coatings off too. Not a great idea... :thumbsdown:

How on earth have you scratched the rear element anyway? :thinking:

Yes. All elements are coated, usually two or three, often more. The rear element is particularly important with digital to minimise reflections bounced off the shiny sensor. When a lens has been 'enhanced for digital' it usually means they've bunged a couple more coatings on the back.

Scratches often look far worse than they actually are. Give the lenses a proper clean (fluid from opticians?) and see how you get on. There's a good chance you won't notice a thing.
