The Queen's Cup is one of the most prestigious matches on the calendar. It's played at Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park.

Here the holders and favourites Loro Piana up against Sumaya in the 2nd semifinal. I decided to try and catch some close-ups of the players as well as the action.

#4 guy on left just missed the equivalent of a penalty. Guy on right unimpressed. Lost them the game effectively.

#5 bit of panning at 1/100th - lots of energy. Check out the body position of the guy on the right.

All action shots taken with a 70-200 + 1.4x on a 1dmkIII. Chap next to me had a 400 prime and missed all the nearby goal action. Hahaha!

The final is on Sunday and I've got a pass. Woohoo! Bring it on Queenie.

Nice shots, think I spotted them on Flickr Wednesday night?

Was hoping to get there myself but had toi go to a meeting!

Thanks chaps.

Panning is really tricky for this stuff as the ponies & riders go up & down as well as along. I always try a panning session in one of the chukkas and have found that I get 2-3 decent shots out of 20-30 that I'll take. The rest are a blurry mess, so the balance of a slow-enough shutter to get the movement and still keep sharp detail on the rider is really hard. I end up at about 1/100th. 1/125th is a tad too fast and you dont get such an impression of speed, and 1/80th is a tad too slow. Still - experimentation is all part of the fun.

Don't you wish they'd build a car park out of sight of the pitch though! :D

I'd always wondered what Range Rover tailgates were for! ;)
