I managed to get out in the garden & give my new toys a try, both shots are full frame, hand held with natural light. Would off camera flash help or would it have to be a ring flash (totally new to macro )


The pond skaters were difficult to track, not sure if they were fighting or just getting it on

Found this Lady having a bath so I rescued her, don't know what her passenger was.

any hints / tips most appreciated

Ah pond skaters, pain to try and track. The ladybird has a springtail on its shell Brian and the red blobs are also springtails in the foreground. Well done on the pond skater shots

Very cool! As said the little things are indeed globular springtails.

As for flash set up I've been using varying milk-bottle set ups with a regular external flash attached to the hot shoe, with some good results, like these:
