poor focus

Yes
my camera allows me to set the lens at autofocus+manual over-ride
the manual ring is quite small and a bit fiddly and i think is there just for the odd times when focus is not quite as you need it
i thought i would set the menu for that thinking it might come in handy on macro and close general work
my eyesight isnt great and i dislike wearing glasses when using the viewfinder...i have the dioptre setting at +max
so
i went out to do some shots and zoomed in on the subject and did autofocus
i then thought i would recompose better by using the zoom rather than move
and turned the manual focus ring
the shots were not very good sharpness and as i recall the speed setting was around the 200-320 range hand held with my zoom only going out to 45 (90)
i have now reverted to fully auto...and will only set the + manual when really needed
object lesson in having two rings on the zoom one of which is rather slim and not used to much extent anyway
cheers

Least you can turn off the manual override on that lens.
The 12-60 and 50-200 are mechanically linked so even with the camera set to autofocus only you can still manually adjust the focus. While that's great for being able to manually pull the focus when the autofocus picks the wrong thing in a crowded scene, you won't believe how long it took me to train myself to stop resting that part of the lens in my hand. I would focus the camera up ready for something, put the camera down to my side, bring it back up as the event I was waiting for approached and ..... move the damn focus ring :bang:

AF has come a long way in the past 25 years... I remember back then looking at early AF offerings and thinking "that'll never catch on"...
Now I find it almost impossible to manually focus with anything near the accuracy of the AF system in my cameras...it doesn't help that the screens are now so fine you can barely see when the subject is out of focus either...

It didn't help that early AF dominance in the market was held by Minolta with the 1985 Dynax 7000 and 9000 models (I think) whereas Canon and Nikon had literally nothing to touch it for another three to five years...

Thank heavens for AF with my eyesight these days (yes, I have adjusted the viewfinder diopter)

mine's is right up to the hilt...any more and i may have to stick a low dioptre lens on the look in part...

that screen on the back is murder on doing a chump...i have to use two pairs of glasses to see them
