Poor sky

Hi

I'm new to digital photography although I did own a SLR camera years ago.

I was taking photo's of a hot air balloon preparing for flight the other night near my home, most pics came out fine but I was wondering if there is any thing I can do to make the sky more interesting in the photos I took of it taking off?

Yes, Bill, you can improve the sky.

Don't know whay photo editing software you, but in Photoshop Elements you can darken the highlights which will improve the sky - even make it dramatic if you like.

I should have said, Bill - say what editing software you are using and someone will post specific instructions.
In PSE go into :-
Enhance
Adjust Lighting
Shadows/Highlights
Drag Darken highlights slider to the right.

lasoo the balloon with magnetic lasoo tool. inverse the selection. Adjust saturation and Hue then adjust using curves. With CS4 it should take about 3 minutes

A little bit of selection and then shadow/highlight tool to darken the sky and lighten the balloon, like this:

Which is basically similar to HDR - split levels of exposure of subject and background/sky.
