Portable Harddrive 1TB: USB powered

You can get a 1TB Lacie for around £80 and Lacie seem to be pretty decent.

The price on this is high for 1TB they are getting down towards £65 in retail stores.

I was in PC World, Currys, Comet and Staples today surveying their HDD pricing...

How about a 2TB for £112.99? (with the use of £7 dicount voucher).

I'm seriously considering one of these as a backup drive.

WD 2TB drive at Maplins

I got a Seagate 1Tb from PC world for about £70. Buy it online and collect instore.

Also a Seagate 250Gb for portable stuff for £25 - Argos.

Good point - the 1Tb is mains..........

the problem is most 1TB drives draw more power and require the additional power..

and regarding dabs id like to know why not to use them, ive used them a few times now and no issues to speak of..

I'm sure there customer service and care is good but they are awfully expensive!

I have owned 3 Lacie external drives and all of them have failed in under a year. Their after sale support is useless too. Luckily it seems to only be the electronics inside the housings that fail (the bit that Lacie makes) not the actual drives but still - avoid.

thanks all.

i will be using it to back up video files mkv, rmvb, avi; so won't be using it constantly, but want it portable i.e. not mains driven. Want: USB powered and as high capacity as possible.

this one is £118 for 1TB (1000GB)
= £0.118/GB

If someone can find one much cheaper and portable (usb powered) please link up

Thats odd, they're the only hard drive I've never known people to have problems with! Guess everything fails for someone. :)

I've been looking for something similar - large capacity and USB powered as I'm spending so long on the road at the moment.

My workflow currently allows me to upload to my 500GB internal HDD and backup to a HD on my network at home. After one month on my HDD it goes onto a permanent drive at home whilst remaining on my backup drive). My internal HDD fills up pretty quickly and I'd like to be able to move things about so it's still on my HDD (for, say 1 month after the shoot), then it goes onto the external HDD and remains on my back up. That way when I get proof requests months after an event I don't need to worry about the next time I'm home to get the photos off the permanent drive.

thanks.

these manufacturers are making these big capacity USB powered so should be ok, but what's the issue?

thanks.

The issue is that USB power is low current (500 mA) and variable. If you have a USB drive connected and another USB device suddenly draws a lot of power, then the drive may find itself switching off in the middle of a write operation. I would hope that the manufacturers have taken this into consideration, but I'm not sure I'd trust my data to hope.

thanks

generally won't have two usb hardware plugged into at once, well definately not two which may be using alot of power

had 2 fail in as many weeks not so long ago.. they seem to use a right mish mash of drive makes and dont use the most reliable out there. remember lacie dont manufacture the actual disk, without opening the case (and voiding your warranty) you could have anything in there.

also avoid any drives using Micro USB, they are complete rubbish at the moment, ive got 2, one is fine cos its always plugged into my Apple TV as external storage, but the other that i carry about with me keeps failing to be detected, seems the Micro USB plugs are not a good idea ! Have read a lot of reports of similar so its not just me.

Thats Micro USB by the way, not the normal Mini USB as they have been fine for me :)

I have a cable that came with a USB drive. It has two connectors for the computer and one for the drive. Allows it to draw more current from the second USB socket. The second is wired for power only. It was either from Freecom or Maxtor. Can't remember which, as the drives work well with hust on connection from the Mac

Or you could look at Firewire...

unfortunately i don't have firewire

think i'll be going for this and ordering tonight, as desperately need one now

1Tb 2.5" drives are going to be £100+ due to the price of the drive itself. The sub £100 1Tb drives are way under £100 because they use 3.5" drives which you can get for about £50-60.

3.5" drives require more power than USB/FW can provide

2.5" drives can be powered by USB/FW

That is the reason the OP's drive is so expensive BUT it is a reasonable price for 1 Tb 2.5" ext drive and does what the OP wants ie large backup with no extra power required.

nice one, on the clarification

this is my top option so will order it soon
