Ok I`m annoyed that they have brought a D3100 out considering I use a D3000 lol but nevermind that.

I`m getting a lot of requests off friends to do "modeling" pictures, but nothing fancy, n bassically, I want to know what would be a good lens as im new to it?

Thanks for your help :)

What lens do you have at the moment? The 18-55? With a little knowledge and practice, you will be able to take cracking model shots with that. You'll know when you are ready for a different lens and have a better idea what type of lens will suit your particular style of photo.

You might well find you need an off-camera flash and a reflector or two before you need a new lens.

Grab one of those Sigma 50/1.4s, the lens will act like a portrait lens on a crop sensor D3000. If it's as good as the 30/1.4, it will be a cracker!

I'd personally go for that over the 50, I always chose the 30 over the 50 on a crop sensor.

Cant go wrong with the 50mm 1.4AFS, it will give you much sharper pics than the kit lens, and allow you to achieve the blurred backgrounds which often help on portrait pics.

I disagree with Dave, I find the 50mm fine on my crop sensor. Sometime I would like to go wider and use my Tamron 28-75, and sometimes wish it was an 85mm instead, but most of the time the 50mm is just perfect.

Most people will agree with you, I guess it all depends on your style of shooting really. The 50mm is superb on FF but then I would think that if I prefer the 30 on DX.

I think the OP mentioned that he will be using the D3000, any lens that is not an AF-S (50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8) will not autofocus on that model body, manual focus only.
