portfolio help

Why are you preparing a portfolio? The purpose will define what you need in it. It's a bit like a CV, you need to review it and prepare it for each and every every outing.

As mentioned above, you need to understand why you're creating a portfolio and as a result what format you want/need it to be. Physical or virtual. A good place to start with a portfolio would be to put what you consider your best photos in. You would also need to figure out whether your portfolio needs a theme and work with that. I use my Flickr as a portfolio because I know if someone asks to see my work, I could access it from almost anywhere and it's entirely indestructible.

the portfolio is for me to take around to a few local photographers in my area, as im now on the hunt to see if i can find a working pupil position or an assistant job to further my experience and knowledge of photography, i have loads of photos on flickr and my facebook group for it but need something portable that doesn't need internet to access

In that case, you need to find out the speciality of each of those photographers and prepare a print or digital portfolio for each. Demonstrating technical competence and innovation/creativity in the relevant areas.

Not much point taking a portrait portfolio to a photographer that specialises in commercial product photography, much better to present some relevant samples. LIkewise, a portfolio of landscapes is of little value to a portrait photographer.

It also demonstrates that you care enough about the position to find out what their specialities and interests are.

okay then thank you and any imfomation on what size prints i should use or does this not matter?

Big enough to see, small enough to carry

It's all about the presentation, find a portfolio album/box/app that you like and you feel is of a quality and style that matches your work. Then print to fit.
