Portrait lens?

Hi,

I am a student, but am wanting to take photography seriously, and get into the industry. Therefore, I need the best lens as possible from like £150-£300 because it's just to get me started.

I want a lens that is great, easy to operate, and is great at focus etc etc to focus purely on close-up portraits and long shots.

Any suggestions? So far someone has suggested I buy the Cannon EF 85mm f1.8.

It would help if you let us know which camera you want to use this lens on...? Oh and which is it to be...

purely close-ups or,
purely long shots...?

Mainly close-ups, and oh yeah, totally forgot!! :S Its a cannon 400D

You say close-up portraits and long shots in your first post now you just have close-up and long shots
To know just one lens you do need to know what subjects you will be taking but I am starting to think a 85mm lens might be too long but more info please
 
I would suggest the 60mm Macro but it is a little out of your price range. Perhaps something similar would suffice.
 
the 50mm 1.4 is a lovely lens :) its my main portrait lens, and always provides nice sharp images... I would imagine an 85 might be a little long for anything indoors? minus head shots... :) supposed to be a great lens ***
 
I would suggest a 50mm 1.4. available from Kerso for just under 300 squids. On your camera body it will be equivalent to an 85mm 1.4 which will be ideal for portraits and more than adequate for longer shots. It is a cracking lens and although supposedly not as sharp at f1.4 if used correctly still gives superb results.. and I suspect it will out-resolve the sensor in your 400D at anything above f3..

One for sale on the forum at the mo for £190 (absolute bargain).
 
WoW wish Id seen this before I would of snapped up the 85mm.. That price for the 50mm is cracking..!
 
50mm f1.4 or 85mm f1.8

on crop I would say the 50 as its more flexible (and 2/3 of a stop faster for when you need it) Just make sure you get the hood as some have a focusing issue if you put pressure on the front element so a permanently fitted bayonet hood is brilliant
 
Is anyone able to show me results from either the 50mm or 85mm lens for cannon? please, maybe portraits if possible?

Why not search on pbase.com or flickr (using the lens name as search criteria)? You'll get loads of suitable results.

Why not try the 50mm f1.8? Similar to the f1.4, but obviously being around 70-80quid it isn't built as well and there are differences in bokeh and optical quality, but it will allow you to get used to the focal length and shallow depth of field, then you can sell it at not much loss to upgrade
