Portrait Lens

What type of portraits? What kinds of conditions? Any particular characteristics you prefer e.g. sharpness, degree of background blur? What budget?

Depends, but assuming you want AF you should maybe look at:

Nikon 85/1.4, or cheaper... the 1.8
Tamron 90
Nikon 70-200

Thanks for all the info guys! only have a couple of hundred squids at the moment so i might wait and save up some more

Take a look at the Tamron. If you're sticking with bodies with motors you can pick up non 'AF-S' versions quite cheaply.

Obviously, if you can wait and save some more you'll have more options.

cheap 50 1.8, or if have more money - Tamron 90 or even Sigma 150mm

You can pick up a second hand Nikon 85mm 1.8 for about £190/£230ish, one of the best portrait lenses around for the price :)

There is no such thing as "the best lens for portrait"

Its purely down to your own particular choice and what you want from your camera. Think about what conditions you have to work in, and the style of portrait you are most likely to shoot, then choose a lens that will be the best for the job.
