Finally other half has crumbled and is allowing me a new lens.

Predominantly use my 1100d for taking pictures of our baby and other kids in the family. Just a bit of direction please. Budget won't be great, somewhere around £300

There's also the canon 85mm 1.8 USM, maybe a little long on a cropped sensor (though would nicely compress background), but superb on a full frame. The equivalent in focal length would be the Canon 50mm 1.8, cheap (£60 used) a little soft wide open, but does sharpen up at smaller apertures. Did a shoot with mine using my studio flash gear a while back on my 5D, shooting at f7 shots per pin sharp ! In low light (indoors) you'd have to shoot as wide as possible so sharpness would suffer. Alternative is the Canon 50 1.4, cost around £220 used, and is sharper and has a better bokeh :-)

I would get the 50mm prime. Standard kit to own if you are a Canon shooter really.
 
I have the 50 f1.8 'nifty fifty' on a 450d and I do love it, it's cheap yes but I have never had an issue with it. However....i am dead set on a 35 f2,because I find the 50 just a little too 'close' on the crop sensor and I'm having to walk back slightly or ask subject to walk back slightly to get them in frame. Like you subject for me is family inc young son and friend portraits.
 
For a baby and kids I think a 50mm is perfect, and the Canon 40mm is also well worth considering. I find 30mm too wide on APS-C for small children, but YMMV.
