Portrait Zoom lens?

Hi

I have a Nikon and need a new zoom lens to take portraits with to go with my 50mm. I have dropped my 18-70!!!!

I loved my 18-70, but would love something a bit sharper, if something is out there. Looking at my portrait shots a lot of them are at the 50-70mm range.

I would like a bit more reach say 120 or 130, but do not want to sacrifice clarity/ sharpness. Sharpness is the number 1 priority, but it has to be zoom. Budget £500ish, but less would be good.

So do I go x-70ish or x-120ish? Any suggestions?

The old 35-70 makes an excellent portrait lens - and not too expensive second hand.

I know you want a zoom, but you could couple that lens with the Sigma 105 or the Tamorn 90 for when you need more length?

I'd recommend the Nikkor 24-120mm AF-D or VR if you've got the cash.

f/8 to f/11 performance is amazing for the price. It's also a very competent (if slightly bulky) walk-about lens too.
