I really like the portrait side of photography and want to take more photos but Mrs & kids are sick to death of me asking them if they can just do a sitting for me.

To get more practise I was wondering if I should ask relatives and friends if they want to pose and I will give them 1 10x8 print for their time, is this the best way to get round finding people willing to pose for a portrait?

I have to be honest, that's the best way I've found it. They're getting something, you're getting something - and they're gonna show people the picture, so you're building a reputation already, if you intend to go pro in the future.

I dont think there is much chance of me going pro Nat :nono:, I just want to get better at portraits and have new people to work with.

I have been waiting for this thread since your tweet... Your issue is lighting and not People.
May I suggest getting the biggest taddy you can or even a manikin and practive your lighting on that first before re-attempting on non-immediate family members?

Fix the lighting and then have fun with the subject without worrying about the lights.
