Hi,

Pretty new here but looking for some help if possible.

I have a Nikon D40 and am happy with it, had it for about 9 months.

Over the past couple of weeks it seems to have developed a problem where in some situations the camera will not auto focus, eg if I point it at the wall in my lounge at a decent distance, maybe 8 metres away, it will just not let me take a picture, the lens will move as if it it trying to foucs but I get no red box or beep and I cannot take a picture.

Does anyone have experience of this, is there maybe something I am missing?

All help appreciated.

Thanks

Michael.

A plain wall, or a patterened wall? Autofocus needs contrast in order to work.

Works fine in normal light, never had a problem with it except for a plain wall, it seems what I have managed to find while googling around is that it will not focus on a blank wall, which has just been confirmed here, problem solved.

I have learned something new, sorry for wasting your time , but appreciate your help.

A black cat in front of a black wall would give the same issue. As stated the AF looks for contrast to work.
