I told you there would definitely be a call for a product photography training day like the fashion/nude ones. I bet you could fill one in no time at all. I would be on the list and I bet you would get loads on TPers

I agree, I am looking for a product photography course!

Good topic, as I am currently 'trying' to do the product photography for my wifes new website. I have a light tent and daylight lamps, but still having 'issues', but these are mainly due to not being familiar with the camera (and being a complete novice to photography).

Does anyone know of a product photography course in the North West?

Darren,

Lighting people is child's play by comparison, all that it requires is an understanding of basic principles and a willingness to forget all the crap about lighting diagrams and the like, and a willingness to experiment.

I don't think I could cover many different subjects/lighting choices in still life photography in just one day.

It isn't my decision anyway, but I'll be happy to ask the boss

Please have a chat with him as I really do think it would be a great course. I have played with it myself but I always end up having to do more PP than I would like. As I really like messing with film now too that is less of an option.

If all the attendees needed a basic studio shooting knowledge and you chose maybe 6-8 different items to shoot would than not give you chance to show the principles etc. Things like a tin of beans, piece of jewellery, camera etc.....

As it happens Lencarta is bringing out some new products specifically related to product photography, so I suppose that there's some argument that it could be in their interest to sponsor a day on product photography.

I don't have a lot of time available but when I get back to the office I'll see if I can manage a date, and then ask Lencarta whether they're prepared to do it, if enough people express interest
 
What about 2 one days courses "Normal" and "Advanced"

If one of them is a product photography table then you are 10 minutes late because I've just bought one :) I was building one and have the metal all cut up which I was welding together etc but the cost of the other bits was more than the cost of this table which is collapsable.

Subject to the usual caveats about dates, duration & pricing - yes!

I came across an article a while back on someone doing a product shot on a vacuum cleaner - used about a dozen lights in total as I recall!!

Im also looking at getting a Light Table so would be very interested in hearing if Lencarta are bringing one out...
 
Also interested here. Always get asked to do product shots for people, and turn them down at the moment, would be good use of my new studio, when im slow on other work.
 
At this rate Garry would have a full course in a few days :thumbs:
 
I'd be up for it too depending on the usual.

Having just been put on risk of redundancy again for the 6th time in 5 years it's a subject I've been thinking a lot about.

Zero skill though :)
 
Well, there is going to be a shooting table in the new product range - 2 in fact - but that isn't the product I had in mind.

To answer the questions as far as I'm able to at the mo, if Lencarta runs with it then it will be on either a Sat or Sun, probably in November, and at my studio in Bradford. If I get sponsorship then the cost will be £60, with £30 back to customers who spend etc, same as this and this and the same times.

I need to check my work diary and also my shooting competition diary, but hope that this can go ahead
 
Gary: I have seen the Portrait/Art nude lighting training day on the website, and I am interested.

I am only just starting in photography (this week), and wanted to know if this course might be a bit beyond me at the moment? Is it better to have had experience of this style of photography and be very familiar with SLRs?

We've had complete beginners before and they've done fine. What's needed is an open mind, and beginners often find it easier to understand the principles than some people who have more experience but who have 'learned' to light badly.

I know somebody who has a studio very close to you ;) who im almost certain would be happy to do a training day or two if we had enough people in the Preston area :)

Sorry, but my experience is the opposite.
I have trained a lot of people over the years, many of them have been complete beginners and nearly all of them have learned a great deal - not about photography in general but about how to tackle a particular problem. This thread is a case in point, the OP knows absolutely nothing about product photography but, for better or worse, has taken on a paid job. OK, she isn't going to produce results that I personally may find acceptable but she is already showing improvement, and that's been achieved just by asking forum questions and (hopefully) sifting through them to separate te wheat from the chaff.

These sponsored lighting days are always oversubscribed, so if I didn't think that beginners would benefit from them I would set a minimum entry requirement.

You're implying that you need to be a seasoned photographer in order to learn something from a course..?

Garry is not suggesting that or implying in any way that by attending his course the attendees will become Product photographers. Some will sharpen their existing skills, some will learn techniques that they didn't appreciate and other may well decide that it's not for them having tried it.

Many, many years ago I attended a Fashion course that was well above my abilities at the time. However, it taught me many things including how much work I had to do to get to the standard of the other attendees.

I still look back on that course and remember certain techniques and tricks. I didn't however go in expecting to come out a fully qualified fashion photographer.

People can bring something with them to be photographed (like Darren's jewellery) so that we get a range of different types of item, although of course there can be no guarantee that we'll have e enough time to photograph all of the different things brought along
 
After suggesting it I just hope that there are some places left by the time I can get clearance to take the day off :help:

What a lovely, and very knowledgeable guy he is.
A cool day out and a lot learnt.
my head is now swimming with ideas to try out in the studio.
