First things first, I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas and I wish you all a very happy new year:wave::wave:

Now to the boring stuff. I dont really understand RAW (ARW) let alone know how to post process it, but here goes. I have a Sony a450 and want to start looking into RAW. The files produced by my camera are (ARW?) and need to look at mid range software to process these. I have been looking at PhotoDirector from CyberLink and other suppliers but remain confused. I need to be honest and say finance is important and I know you only get what you pay for, but I would like to keep it in and around £100.

Can anyone firstly offer any advice on PhD, and secondly stop me buying something that I would regret.

I know its a big ask, but this is the best place to air this issue:thumbs:

Thank you in advance.

I don't know anything about Sony's ARW files but a quick Google came up with the freebie called Able RAWer which seems to be able open ARW files.

I'm guessing that you should be able to open a ARW file and convert it to another more easily to handle format, eg DNG.

A large number of photo editors, some of which are free, will handle DNG files.

However, did the camera not come with the Image Data Converter software that will read ARWs?

Photoshop Elements should do the trick. It's got a price reduction a the moment (£67) and really is a useful bit of software. Plus, because it's widely used there are is a lot of resource on the web relating to its use. If it's like other Adobe software, it'll update as and when new cameras come out - don't know how old yours is but PSE should handle your sony raw files no problems.

Don't know anything about the software you're looking at - but that's not to say it's not any good. :)

:plusone:

Try to get the latest version (Photoshop Elements 10) as I've used versions 8 & 9 and recently upgraded my camera to a D7000, and PSE8 & 9 didn't work with the updated raw format and there was no upgrade! :|

you can download a free trial of it at www.adobe.com

Photoshop Elements 10 currently £49.99 on Amazon

Thank you so much for the very helpful information. It looks like it might be Amazon and PSE10 then. Be warned, once I buy it I will be looking for tutoring:lol:

Just ordered one myself so will be needing help too.
