Guys,
I posted my D3 off to the purchaser today, so it is a bit late now really, but I was staggered at the postage, £27! How do you send gear about the place?
 
If it's an expensive item I always go with RMSD due to their insurance levels. There is a weight (2kg I think) where the price is £14 which is reasonable for up to £2500 insured, after that it doubles to £27 if above 2kg. I've sent some cheaper but larger items by UPS or my Hermes. They are usually more competitive for lower value heavier items than Royal Mail.
 
try UK Mail as well, used them quite a few times and they have always been good. Go through there website ipostparcels.com.
 
I send via RMSD with insurance. £27 sound about right. I always tell the buyer the cost and what I'm sending with to protect both party.
 
I usually send all my unwanted stuff to Ffordes and they arrange the courier to collect. It's a one off cost of £25 so I pile stuff up I now I won't want. It's a lot less hassle. Saves posting gear about ;)

The parcel third parties like ipostparcels/parcelmoneky can be terrible if there is a problem. I'd either send RMSD or via DPD/Interlink Direct for anything of value. For lower value stuff I generally stick with RM and choose a slower but still signed for service.
 
I agree with gramps on making sure that what you send is well insured.

Has anyone had the unfortunate experience of someone buying something off them, paying but the item getting lost in the post. Obviously the buyer is out money and item. What is considered the best way to deal with such a situation?

I usually try to sell stuff face to face so that the buyer can try it out and be 100% before the sale concludes. However I'm just about to try and sell my 1DX and suspect that I will probably have to post it.

The advantage of RMSD is that if it does go astray then you do get paid out as long as you have declared and insured for the correct value.

You may think so, as I did.,

But if you post with Royal Mail or Parcel Force you need the original sales receipt to claim back your loss.

So if you have something damaged by them as I did that you bought 2nd hand prepare for a war.
