Potentially swapping from Nikon to Canon after robbery

Long story short. Got robbed, lost my D7000, 4 lenses and a flash. Only thing trying me to Nikon at this stage is a Tokina 12-28 f4 (unused and potentially going back or on eBay), a lens cap from a Nikon 50mm 1.8, and a collection of Nikon boxes.

Originally I went Nikon after playing with the D80 and it's Canon equivalent in Jessops and preferring the feel of the Nikon. It felt more solid and a little larger which was handy for me with large hands.

Anyway, my B-I-L works for Canon and can get a slight discount with full warranty and cashback etc, and the 10 people I know with DSLRs all have Canon gear, so I would be a fool if I didn't at least reassess the situation.

My boss is lending me his 7D for my holiday this weekend so I can have a play and see how it feels and a mate has the 60D.

Basically who else has done the brand swap at this kind of level, what things took a while to get used to, what came more naturally or seemed easier, pros and cons, what are some of the differences to be aware of between the sexes, etc.

Not only that, talk to me about lenses. I can't afford things in the £600+ range so bear that in mind!

I'm reading reviews and looking at some images on flickr but I know all will take a decent picture, I just know next to nothing about Canon gear as I've never had to know.

Were I to stay Nikon it would be another D7000 or possibly the D7100.

Sorry about your loss. First thing is how it feels to you. If it does not feel right your less likely to use it. Second thing with the way most insurance company's work these days your more likely to be sent the equipment closes to what you had. So have you checked that ? As for more help I think it would help to list the main type of pics you take, and the lenses you had.

you got ROBBED ??? some sod came up and took them from you- that is an aweful thing to happen to anyone!

I was subject to a burglery last year- and that was quite horrendous for all the family, but it must be far worse to get ROBBED

I hope they get the B*astard that did this :bang:

Which Nikon lenses did you have? Would you be looking for equivalents? Although Canon and Nikon both have pretty comprehensive ranges, each has gaps, and it might not be ideal if one of your favourite Nikon lenses doesn't have a Canon equivalent.

A direct replacement would be fine if they were to do that. I was told that they don't handle photography gear themselves and just farm it out to another company. I'm just looking at the overall picture should they just give me a chunk of change instead. Really wouldn't be a problem if they got me another D7000.

I had a 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8 and a Sigma 70mm 2.8 macro and a 24-70mm 2.8. I've had others in addition to that but ended up selling them due to under use.

Were I to buy again I'd probably only get one of the 35 or the 50, and I;d not get the sigma 24-70 again were I going Nikon as I did have my eye on something else (though what that was now eludes me).

I'm not really after anything long zoomish, and I do quite like primes.

I have my bosses 7D for the next week or so, feels nice and solid which is a good start. Takes a little getting used to not having the dials in the same place though.

They must provide cash (cheque etc) if that's what requested. They cannot insist on providing vouchers or goods. If what has been stolen is no longer produced then the replacement should be an item of a similar position in the range: ie top of range for top of range, mid range for mid range.
