I have been trying to figure out some of the settings on my camera and having done some fiddling and pressing buttons I had to do a restore, and still none the wiser on how to set things up. I need to start practising properly, the only trouble is I don't know where or what to practise doing doing any suggestions please would be gratefully received.

Julian,

You seem to be doing fine to me. Just take lots of shots

You will not break the camera messing with settings. Whilst we are having a brew at the zoo or sooner if I get a chance to pop up there/you down here I will show you how to set up 4 different setups. You can then save this onto the small memory card you have and restore to it when you want to.

You can have a setup for wireless with your flash for example and another for studio type etc etc.

Cheers mate how are you fixed for us to pop up tomorrow around half 4 or 5 to drop these ramps off and pick my Carers laptop up?

No problem whatsoever, I have bought the stuff to fix my welder and the metal so that I can build the smaller ramp into the studio itself :) So with that I should be able to have a go with studio photography too soon!

Make a note of the settings you want help with and we can write them down. It might be worth getting a small hard backed book for doing notes on instructions and what settings work for you. I will show you how to set auto ISO too.

Hey Julian, don't fret buddy, there is a lot to take in at first. It's taken me about 4 months to get used to the Nikons after being a Canonite for so long and I'm supposed to know what I'm doing!

Ask Darren to pop it on auto ISO, stick to A for a bit and just play with apertures till you get used to what they do. :)

thanks Alison will keep at it. thanks for those links dslr.

I have the kids sports day to have a go at this afternoon.

Ok..

Don't worry about not understanding everything. There are setting that I understand in so far as I know what the setting does but not when to use them and I have had Nikons for a few years! Still not sure which metering mode to use for what etc..........

I have had the D300s for 5 months now and it certainly takes some getting used to and can feel quite daunting at first so you aren't alone. I found the Kelby D Town TV videos posted by cowasaki a real help, there's lot of tips for the D300s.

Also, I found this free 10 part online course to be a help when I first started out a couple of years ago, explains the basics of composition, aperture and shutter speed, ISO etc.

Thanks all for those links I have bookmarked them, and will go through them 1 by 1. I just hope I dont mess up the kids sports day today :D

hi..practice taking photos...sooner or later you will wish you could overcome some difficulties with lighting perhaps
then you may need to reset some items in the menu...type of metering and zone focussing

i set most things to auto...colour balance...or default..the most general and useable settings

you wont get there unless you start to walk

Really now that would really be a miracle.
