Has taken me a couple of weeks to confirm the D90 is the camera for me - now trying to work out how and where to spend the money.

I can't afford two lenses to start with so I am thinking of starting with the body and a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF lens rather than the standard kit lens. I feel I'll learn to use the camera better and quicker with this lens, and i want to concentrate on portraits for a while.

Wonder what people think of this idea.

I purchased the 50mm f1.8 not so long ago. It's a great lens - nice and sharp, and ideal for portraits. The sharpness of the lens is far better than you'll get with any other lens in its price category. Don't worry about investing in the f1.4 model early on - you'll pay an extra £100 (or more) for that .4 of a stop, and you won't really need it. I've taken some lovely portraits with mine. You'll also find you learn some good discipline with a fixed lens, as you have to move to change your framing, rather than just toggle a zoom.

Well worth it - go for it.

You will never be upset that you bought a AF50 f/1.8 they are a seriously good lens. They are THAT good that I actually bought a 2nd one just for my spare body !! When I have my new body and lens I will be upgrading one of them and getting the f1.4 Its just a shame that I didn't get the 1.4 when I bought my camera 2 years ago. At that time the 1.8 was £49 and the 1.4 was £129 (from HK)

Thanks guys - glad to hear your experiences reflect what I've been reading about this lens. Oooh, can't wait to get my hands on it now. :D

Now all I need to do is pick up a body 2nd hand!
