I hope someone/anyone can help me out.......I am in need of advice about how best to prepare images for the web...........I have tried many different ways and none of them seem to give the sort of brilliant jump off the screen images appearing on this site. My system is calibrated and profiled and the images look fantastic on my monitor but when I save the images for the web and convert to sRGB they look awful when viewed on any other monitors.... the images look muddy and lack contrast......I would appreciate if someone could have a look and hopefully advise me where I am going wrong.

Thanks in advance

Hi David

All I do is to prepare the images using photoshop elements to the required adjustments and then click 'save for web', I then alter the compression down to the required image size (say 2180kb rather than 3 MB) and adjust the size if there are restrictions in place - say 800 pixels along longest side.

How do other people photos look on your monitor, are they as good as yours ?

Have you tried to re-calibrate your monitor in case it's out ?

Have you tried loading an image without any manipulation (a good one looking on the lcd of the camera) to see what these look like on other peoples monitors ?

If you look at the flickr site in my signature, these photos were taken for my friend who has set up as a joiner and wanted some photos doing. I shot these in RAW, did a small amount of manipulation nd saved for web etc as above.

Hope this is of some help,

the trick is finding a middle ground between file size and image quality.

2MB is too big for an image embeded within a webpage (that isnt for viewing for sales) is too big in my opinion. but then thats subjective to what you concider to be the average internet speed.

Thanks for the swift reply, It's not the calibration as it's done weekly
.
Before uploading I convert the image profile to sRGB in photoshop and then save for the web/resize etc.............the images always look a bit muddy on other monitors.
When I look at websites on lets say my pc at work all the images from various websites look fine but when I go to my site the images look flat. I am sure there is a very simple solution but its very frustrating at the moment.

Regarding file size: This is what I do... hope its right, I know it works for me!

I use photoshop CS2. If I want to load my images to the web I use the Image menu, Image size option and set the dpi to 72dpi - screen resolution - first. This drastically reduces your file size but retains enough detail for the screen. I then adjust the dimensions of the photo to whatever I need...

Hope this helps

David, are you working on Adobe RGB with your images? When you convert to SRGB it does change how they look. Can you post an example? If you have raw, do another conversion into SRGB, and then using the Image Size dialog, make the image the pixel length and height you want - usually no more than 800x600, often smaller. Save for web, choose a high quality, save as a .jpg. That might help.

I have no idea how to place images here so there is one in my albums which I believe you can view......on my monitor this image is very rich and pops off the screen...bright reds with good contrast and detail in the highlights and shadows.......how does it look to you ?
