I wasn't sure which section to post this but wondering if anyone has any experience in working with old photographs. My Mum has just passed away and being interested in both photography and family history I've volunteered to sort out the photos. There are boxes of them, many dating back to 30s and 40s. I plan to scan them but was thinking of having them somewhere online where the whole family can access them. After that I would like to keep them safe but don't know how to store them for protection.

Any ideas or advice would be gratefully received.
 
You could store the scans on a Flickr account. Ooodles of storage at not much cost and you can police who has access to the images. As far as storing the originals is concerned that's not some thing I can comment on with any great authority. Developed 35mm slides and film is reasonably stable provided its kept in a cool,dry and dark environment. The same applies to most printed material but it'll really depend on the print medium.
 
I have a free Photobucket account I use for this. Family and friends all know the log on details and password and can view and upload as they wish. When someone wants a full sized image they just let me know and I can supply electronically or a print size they want. This all seems to work, it's Simples and free :D
 
Flickr is free & up to 1 TB storage.

You could always buy a cheap storage device & also burn to DVD's.
 
Thanks all. Think I'll use something like Flickr or Photobucket for sharing. Have searched on Google and there are special photo archive boxes which I might look further into. Want to preserve them as best I can after they've been scanned.
 
Acid free archive boxes. If you're needing quite a few consider the library supplies catalogues. In the past I've bought archive storage materials from www.gresswell.co.uk
 
If any are transparencies , beware of mould and spots developing that eat away at the emulsion. Not personally sure what the answer is, although a ventilated but cool dark place wold seem to be ideal in that respect.
