I was just curious what you all thought about the current price of the Canon 35mm L - at Jessops they want £1199.00 for it. Is that worth it, or is that a bit much?

My goal is to eventually get the 35mm L, 85mm L and 135mm L, so I thought I'd start with the 35...

Did the price go up because of the recession?

your price is funny... you need to state if this is the 2.8, 1.8 or whatever

Well...a visit to the first site I could think of saved £50 so I'm pretty sure that you can do better if you let Google be your friend but if J... is local to you and you want to deal with them then it might be worth the extra for the local service.

I don't know if the recession is to blame, maybe Christmas is equally / more to blame and the price might drop a little in the new year?

Personally I think I'd go for a Sigma 28mm f1.8 as I have the similar 20mm f1.8 and I think it's great but if you are set on the 35mm L and it's in budget then why not go for it?

PS - Why did J (shop name) turn to a link when I typed it in???? I didn't make it a link???

Haha... yea the forum automatically turns it into a link even if you didn't specifically make it a link.

The only reason I'm considering Jessops is because they have a great return policy and I can get it really quickly and conveniently without any hastle.

And the reason I wasn't looking at the Sigma is because I've had some serious problems in the past with 3rd party Lens vendors (Tamron), which is kind of detouring me from using them now.

the 35L is an amazing lens, razor sharp right down to 1.4 (which creates its own problems - the focal plane is so thin it can be hard to get right).

I've just sold mine, I didnt use it at 1.4 enough to justify the money tied up in it, the 24-70 was spending much more time on the camera.

I prefer primes, and the 24-70 is quite the brick for walking around.

Bought mine for £999 from LCE before all the prices went up late last year.

Kerso has it advertised on Ebay for this price still.

I would also suggest checking Kerso's prices. You should be able to save around £200 that way. If you're looking for a cheaper alternative then the Canon 35 f/2 is an excellent performer. :)
