Prime lens for landscape

Recently upgraded to D700 and 24-70 and been given green light by better half to start going out in lakes again now that our little one has settled in.

I have been considering a wider, smaller and lighter alternative to the 24-70 for landscape use and like the idea of trying a wide prime in the region of 20mm.
Looked at the Samyang 14mm but ruled out as I believe it doesn't take filters . Also looked at various Nikon 20mm's and the Voigtlander 20mm f/3.5 SLII has some good reviews.

Anyone have any opinions/ recommendations etc, or would I be better off saving a bit and getting a heavier, bulkier but more versatile 16-35 vr?

I have the 12-24mm Nikon lens, ok its not a prime lens but still is very good at doing what your after

Ah, that would be why I havnt looked at it, it's a DX lens.
 
The 14-24 f2.8 is an awesome lens, although expensive and hard to use filters on. Amazing quality though, not far off the IQ of a prime. It's on my shopping list when I go full frame!
 
Thanks Gary, as much as I'd like one too, it's physical size and weight are similar to 24-70 which is why I was looking at a prime, plus it is more than double my current budget.
 
Thanks Phil, the 11-16 i think is built for DX sensor, I had looked briefly at the 16-28 Tokina but again, looking to try something a bit lighter.
 
I would pass on the Voigtlander 20mm f/3.5 SLII to be honest, does not get the best reports from the range (the 40mm however is superb).

There is the Nikon 20mm f3.5 AIS, or at the other end of the cash scale the Zeiss 21mm f2.8.
 
The Zeiss does look like THE lens for the job but will have to save for a while to get it, in the mean time, I've been looking more closely at Nikkor 20 f/2.8 AIS. Any one use one for landscapes that could post some examples?
