I got a lens of ebay (50mm f1.8) and to me the images appear soft. I know it does not have image stabalisation but I had hoped for better. Is it faulty or am I missing something ?

These are both taken in poor light and hight ISO but one appears much softer than the other

This is F4 1/90 sec on the 50mm lens

This is F5 at 1/30 sec on the kit lens (18 - 105mm)

Are they handheld?

1/90 handheld is still quite long. Try it on a tripod or sturdy surface and report back.
It may have been because the camera is a bit lighter with the fifty on, that you moved when you pressed the shutter and didnt realise.
 
You cant tell how sharp anything is from that shot - there's far to much noise its shot at ISO3200, try in good light at ISO200 and a nice fast shutter speed

Thanks everyone, yeah I will try that tomorrow. I did try with flash as it was a little better and very sharp with flash and F8
