Prime Lenses

Hi.

I am a very new DSLR owner. I own a Nikon D3100 with the 18-55 kit lens. For some reason my photographer friend wants me to assist her at a wedding next month! I am looking at buying a prime lens for my camera. I was looking at the relatively inexpensive 35mm or 50mm prime lenses.

I know personal preference should prevail but I just wondered what some people's preference would be.

As you have a 18-55mm a good idea might be to set it to 35 and then 50mm and see which length you prefer.

Whichever you choose it would need to be the AF-S version with the motor in the lens.

So that is the 35 f1.8, or the 50 f1.4G, there is a 50 f1.8G due shortly, but I doubt it will be available in time.

Hi there,

In what way does your friend want you to assist? Does she want you to be assisting her taking photos or looking after gear and organizing guests for shots? If it's for taking photos is there a certain type of shot she is delegating to you (headshots/group shots)?

Some more info would help. Also, a prime can be quite limiting at a wedding shoot unless it's a certain type of shot you are after.
